Things to Do

  • Take a walk through Plaza 9 de Julio, Salta’s main square. See the nineteenth-century cathedral and the Cabildo, a national monument that houses the Museum of Northern History and the Colonial Museum.
  • Visit the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña, which was created in 2005 to preserve the Inca mummies discovered on the Llullaillaco Volcano in 1999. The perfectly-preserved mummies of three children were sacrificed in a religious rite five centuries ago.
  • Ride in a cable car to the top of Cerro San Bernardo for panoramic views of the city.
  • Take a day trip and visit Las Salinas Grandes, high-altitude salt flats.
  • Sample wine in Cafayate, the heart of the second-largest wine-producing region in the country.
