Ciudad Valles is a beautiful city in the state of San Luis de Potosí, it is the center of commerce and supply of the entire region. There are splendid waterfalls and great attractions around the city.
Ciudad Valles was founded in 1533 by Nuño de Guzman, and is located in the Huasteca potosina region. The word “Huasteca” has a Nahuatl origin, a Mexican macro-language that dates back to the 5th century and has two meanings: “small snail” and “guaje”, which is a type of leguminous plant.
Native cultures like téenek and nahuas still have a big influence over the city and its surroundings. There you will find all types of traditional artisanal products made by the native huastecan populations of the area themselves.
The city also offers lots of opportunities to discover gastronomy, in many restaurants you will be able to try typical dishes such as zacahuil or bolim (which are local tamales). You can also try the “Tacos El Yaquero” or “Mariscos del 7 mares” to get a full huastecan experience.
While walking around the streets of Ciudad Valles, you may hear and enjoy the rhythms of Huapango and see people improvising dances in the middle of the streets.

If you’re looking for outdoor activities, you should come during the first half of the year. On the contrary, if rain doesn’t bother you, visit the Huasteca Potosina in the second half of the year.
You can first visit the city of Ciudad Valles. In the center, you can admire its oldest building, the Parish of Santiago Apostle, built in the sixteenth century and in contrast, the modern Cathedral. In the same area are located places like the Hidalgo Garden and the Alameda, two spaces for walking, and enjoy a pleasant atmosphere under the shade of trees.
You must also stop at the Municipal Market, you will find a wide and varied offer of local products, there you will not be able to avoid trying some of the gastronomic delights of the region.
There a lot of waterfalls around the city where you can enjoy the scenery and a relaxed atmosphere, bathing in the turquoise waters of its rivers, or jump into the adventure of hiking, rappelling or rafting.

Land – There are direct buses from big cities such as Mexico (9 hrs) and Monterrey (7 hrs) to Ciudad Valles. From Mexico prices start around $30 and around $40 from Monterrey. You can also reach the capital of the state, San Luis Potosi within a 4-hour bus ride that should cost around $30.
Air – The closest international airport is Tampico airport, located 2:30hrs far from Ciudad Valles. There are buses everyday between the airport and the city.
