Iquitos, means ‘crowd separated by the waters’ in the Ikita, an almost extinct native language that was spoken in the Amazon region between Ecuador and Peru. Today Iquito is the 5th largest city in Peru, after Piura (in the north), besides the fact that is located in the middle of the Amazon, and it is impossible to get there by car, without taking a boat or a flight. In fact Iquitos is the largest city on earth unreachable by road.
With the years, has become the best option to explore the Amazon in Peru, because it has the best infrastructure among the cities in the Jungle or ‘ciudades selvaticas’ how the Peruvians know them.
