This 6-day adventure will take you to the incredible hiking destinations El Calafate and El Chalten. You’ll witness the powerful beauty of Perito Moreno Glacier and Fitz Roy Mountains, among other sights in Argentine Patagonia.
On this 6-day tour with a local guide, you’ll experience some of the best trekking routes Patagonia has to offer. Take in the awesome beauty of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre on nature trails winding from El Chalten. Visit the famous Perito Moreno Glacier and take a boat ride on Lake Argentina to get up close to the growing ice.
You’ll have time to explore the Patagonian towns of El Calafate and El Chalten, and choose hiking excursions that match your interests and fitness level. A bilingual guide will explain the history and diverse wildlife in this region, as well as help you choose your hiking routes. All accommodation and transfers to different destinations are included in this tour.
Day 1 – Explore El Calafate
Your guide will pick you up from the airport in El Calafate and take you to your hotel in the city. You’ll have free time to explore this Patagonian town, located on Lake Argentina near Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia. If you choose, you can take a 1km like to Laguna Nimez for a stunning sunset view.
Day 2 – Witness the Perito Moreno Glacier
You will rise early for a trip to Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the only glaciers in the world that is still advancing. You’ll hear thunderous cracks as blocks of ice rupture from the massive glacier and fall into Lake Argentina below. A UNESCO-protected site, Perito Moreno is one of the top destinations in Argentina, as well as Patagonia.
You can stroll along walking trails and viewing platforms and take pictures of the icy giant while your guide tells you more about the region. Next, you’ll board a boat to sail close to the icy walls of the glacier. After a thrilling day, you’ll return to your hotel in El Calafate.
Day 3 – Travel through southern Patagonia to El Chalten
On a public bus ride down the famous Route 40, you’ll see fantastic views of southern Patagonia and the La Leona River, which connects two great lakes in Argentina. You’ll also be able to see the road house where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid out after a bank robbery.
One of the world’s top trekking destinations, El Chalten is the gateway to mountainous trekking paths, sparkling lakes, and glaciers. The small town is situated at the base of Mount Fitz Roy, and there’s plenty you can choose to explore this day in the city and beyond. Your guide will recommend trekking options and local restaurants.
Day 4 – Self-guided trek in the mountains
On this day, there are a variety of trekking opportunities you can choose from. If you prefer a shorter option, you can trek 3km to an excellent viewing point of the lenga forest and wildlife. For the best mountains views, you can trek to the Cerro Torre outlook point in less than two hours.
If you’re interested in a full-day hike, trek the Laguna Los Tres path to see the stunning peaks of Mount Fitz Roy. This route takes about 8 hours to complete, and it’s a bit strenuous at the end, but we strongly recommend it.
Your guide will brief you on the trails and provide information about all the trekking opportunities in the park, so you can choose the plan that best fits your interests and skill-level.
Day 5 – Morning hike and transfer to El Calafate
Take a morning hike of your choice before boarding the bus back to El Calafate. You’ll arrive at the city in about 3 hours.
Day 6 – Transfer to the airport
Your guide will take you to the airport or bus terminal at your chosen time.
