Trek on top of one of the largest glaciers in the world – Perito Moreno!
This is a unique opportunity to walk on top of one of the largest glaciers in the world – Perito Moreno! Most travelers to the area look at the glacier from a boat or from a lookout point across the water – this tour gives you even more incredible views from on top of the glacier, including ice formations, streams, lagoons, and crevasses. This is a must do adventure if you will be in the El Calafate area during your trip!
Pick up: 07:30am in El Calafate
Drop off: 5:30pm – 6:00pm (17:30-18:00)
Hiking time: ~2 hours total, 1.5 hours on the glacier
Difficulty: The hike is moderately difficult – the terrain is highly irregular, but firm
Availability: Every day between September and April
The day begins with pick up at your place of lodging in El Calafate around 7:30am – the drive to the port near Perito Moreno glacier is about 1.5 scenic hours. At the Bajo de las Sombras port (about 6km before the glacier lookout point), you will get on a boat that will take you on a beautiful 20 minute ride through Lago Rico, to the southwest side of the glacier.
When you arrive, you will be divided into groups of no more than 20 people and matched with a guide. From here, there is a 20 minute walk from the shore to the edge of the ice. Once you reach the ice, your guide will help you put on the crampons and instruct you on how to walk properly with them on. The hike on the ice lasts about 1.5 hours, every minute of which will be memorable thanks to the incredible and unique views!
The hike ends back at the shoreline, where you will return the crampons, and then have time to have lunch. Remember to bring your own lunch as it is not included in the tour and there is nowhere on the shore to buy food! After lunch, the group will board the boat, and head to the lookout points across from the glacier to enjoy the views from that perspective. After about an hour, the group will head back to El Calafate, where you will arrive around 5:30 or 6:00pm (17:30 – 18:00).
