Learn all about Mayan history as you visit the Altun Ha Maya ruins. Walk on the same ground as the ancient Mayans and relive the past.
Altun Ha means “rock stone water” in the ancient Mayan language, and embodies 1000 years of ancient Belizean history. Join us on this half-day tour to the Altun Ha Maya ruins, as we bring you back in time to the world of the ancient Mayan civilization.
Just 33 miles (53 km) away from Belize’s capital Belize City, these ruins are comprised of jungle-shrouded temples and palaces, and the site was a small but extravagantly rich major ceremonial center occupied during the classic period. On this tour, you will get a chance to walk on the same path the Mayans had walked on in the past, amongst some of the mounds that have been partially excavated and restored.
Besides all these, you will also get a chance to see the buried Sun God Temple, which stands 54 feet (16.5 m) from the plaza floor. This was also where the largest carved jade object in the Mayan world was found. Hike above some of its highest monumental structures and inhale the fresh air of the pristine green rainforest that surrounds you, where your guide will also be pointing out some of the local remedies of the rainforest used by the ancient Mayans.
