Spend a half day exploring the protected Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. Hol Chan, whose name means “little channel” in Mayan, is a 30-foot deep “cut” in the reef where all sorts of marine life now live in one area. Here you’ll swim next to live corals and a colorful variety of fish such as angelfish, turtles, nurse sharks, hog fish, snappers and many other species.
Located just one mile south of Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley is the second most popular zone of the reserve. The area is more shallow than Hol Chan, about 8 feet in depth, and is home to an abundance of harmless nurse sharks and stingrays. Once a place where fishermen would clean their catch, the area is now a snorkeling hot spot. While underwater, you will be able to see a variety of beautiful reefs and various other vibrant marine life.
The area covers approximately 18 km² of coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forest, and is the country’s oldest marine reserve. The reef has some of the best snorkeling the country has to offer and serves as an important refuge for marine life.
Belize snorkeling options are endless. You’ll enjoy some of the best snorkeling in world while swimming through the caves of the Greatest Living Barrier Reef! The waters are picture perfect and the marine life is phenomenal.
