Itinerary

Begin your day private pick-up from your hotel in Belmopan to the trailhead at St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

Encounter lush vegetation and abundant wildlife on the “Hummingbird Highway” trail. As you hike, your guide will introduce you to the natural landscape and to the history of the Maya Mountains. After about 30 minutes of hiking, you’ll arrive at the mouth of the cave. Here is where the real fun begins! Leave the sunny jungle behind and enter the Mayan Underworld.

As you float through the caves, your headlamps will light the way. Encounter breathtaking natural wonders like millennia-old stalactites looming from the roof of the cave, and stalagmites reaching out from the water below. Spot sparkling crystal formations shining in the dim light.

As you continue your journey through the caves, you’ll “dock” your inner-tubes on a rocky shore. Here, you’ll see the remnants of ancient ceremonial sites, including fire pits and thousands of ceramic shards from the Maya who once used this space as a place of worship and celebration.

The ancient Maya considered caves to be portals to the Underworld — Xibalba. Inside the caves, they’d contact their ancestors and worship their gods with elaborate prayers and offerings. As you explore, take a moment to close your eyes an sense the powerful spiritual history in these deep caverns.

Before you head back to your hotel, you’ll have the opportunity to change your clothes in private changing facilities so you can enjoy a comfortable ride.
