Get ready for a full day of climbing, caving, and rappelling! The adventure begins at 07:00 am, and after a few minutes drive we will arrive to the Caves Branch Jungle Lodge, here we will get ready and suit up for a powerful hike into the Maya Mountains, all the way up to Actun Loch Tunich, also known as “Mother of All Caves”.
The amazing Black Hole we are looking for is found near the mouth of the cave. And Although it is not really bottomless, it sure seems like it! The floor of this shocking sinkhole lies nearly 500 feet beneath your feet, it’s so dark that it is impossible to see the bottom.
Once we get here, the experienced caving guides will set up a system of harnesses and rappelling ropes. When the system is ready, it’s your time to get strapped, and then the adventure begins with a heart-pounding leap over the edge. As we descend below 100 feet, the view opens up and it gives the brave ones who tried this an unforgettable sight of the tops of the jungle canopy. After you admire this amazing view, we keep descending beneath the level of the tree tops and start getting into the Black Hole itself.
When we get to the bottom, it’ll be time for a well-deserve rest and a delicious picnic lunch. After we rest for a while, it’s time to go back by climb both ladders and rock faces until we make our way back to the surface. From here, it’s an easy walk back downhill and back to the van for the trip home.
