Get ready to do some Birding in the amazing Spanish Lookout area and Laguna Aguacate, amazing spots in Belize! We first start with a quick coffee in town, and at 6:00 am we head towards the Mennonite farmlands of Spanish Lookout. Thanks to this mosaic of agricultural lands, open fields, riparian habitat and patches of forest, we will be in the presence of a diverse mix of birds. Here we will go to the Aguacate lagoon, where we will find a pristine broadleaf forest with species such as slaty-tailed trogon, rufous-tailed jacamar, ruddy woodcreeper, and strong-billed woodcreeper. There is a part where the forest merges into a small lake where blue-wing teals, wood storks, least grebes, and yellow-crowned night herons can be found.
After this we will head to the open fields, which are the playgrounds for aplomado falcons and crested caracaras and here is also where white-tailed hawks soar, looking for a meal. These fields are also an excellent place to find vermilion flycatcher, blue ground-dove and black-cowled orioles. Towards the end of the day, we will spend some time near the river where we will find species like mangrove swallow, amazon kingfisher, and perhaps even the elusive and super-cute American pygmy kingfisher.
