This incredible tour will bring you to two beautiful ancient cities that were once part of a network of kingdoms and ruling families. First, immerse yourself in history with a visit to Xunantunich. Later, explore the trading center of Cahal Pech near the town of San Ignacio.
Xunantunich achieved its greatest success during the Terminal Classic Period (AD 750-900) before ultimately facing its own demise when it became part of the “Maya collapse.” This impressive Maya ceremonial site on the border with Guatemala is well-excavated and easily accessible. El Castillo, the second tallest ancient Maya structure in Belize, stands at 130 feet above ground level and provides a 360 degree view of the Belize River Valley.
After lunch in San Ignacio Town, we’ll drive a quick 10 minutes to Cahal Pech, one of the oldest Maya sites in Belize. Archaeological findings prove that the Maya inhabited Cahal Pech from 1200 BC until AD 900. Its architectural style indicates that it was once an important residential center of the royal family.
