DAY 1 – Hike to Los Yungas Valley
At around 8:00 am, you’ll transfer from your hotel and make the 45 minutes – 1 hour drive to the trailhead at La Cumbre. At (4,700 meters), the weather will be cold in the morning, and it’s not uncommon to see snow or frost covering the ground.
From the frosty trailhead, you’ll begin the 6-hour hike to Los Yungas. At about (4,900 meters), you’ll intersect with a pre-Inca road along the ridge that dates back hundreds — if not thousands — of years. You’ll follow the small path and descend into the warm valleys of Los Yungas. With the sun higher in the sky and the direct sunlight in the valley, you’ll enjoy a marked difference in temperature from the morning.
In mid-afternoon, you’ll arrive in the village of Challapampa, where you’ll set up camp, relax, and prepare for your longer hike tomorrow.
DAY 2 – Descend to the Misty Cloud Forest
Today, you’ll wake up early, enjoy a hearty breakfast, and begin the 8-hour hike through misty and otherworldly cloud forest. Although you’ll make several small ascents throughout the day, your trek will lead you to lower elevations into the cloud forest. Here, you’ll notice dense vegetation, a tropical-like climate, and an archetypal mist that envelopes the high canopy above you.
After 8 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at the small community of Sandillani, where you’ll eat a well-earned dinner and camp for the night.
DAY 3 – Hike Semi-Tropical Jungle Trails to Chairo
Your last day involves 5 to 6 hours of hiking through semi-tropical jungles to Chairo. Here, you’ll feel lightyears away from the frosty, snow-covered trailhead. The trails are hot and humid, so stay hydrated and bring your insect repellent! Your trek will end when you arrive at the village of Chairo. From there, you’ll get a private transport back to La Paz.
