Meet the Indigenous People of Chile on Pehuenche Route

Enjoy an adventure of 8 days in three great Pehuenche territories in Andean Araucanía. You will share with the indigenous people of Chile, more particularly, the Mapuche people. You will know the ancestral traditions of indigenous people, throw conversations about Mapuche cosmovision and their relations with the natural spaces.

The route includes the visit to emblematic national parks of Villarrica and Conguillío, in addition to guided hiking with an explanation about local flora and fauna.

Itinerary

Day 1: Discover the Mapuche community

The local guide will receive you in Kurarewe Square for the program presentation. You will walk until Intercultural Trawupeyum Village. A museum guide will present topics about the indigenous people: the Mapuche people and their territory, cultural traditions, music, community, ceremony, and daily lifestyle.

After the visit to the museum, you will move to the beginning of Trapial Viewpoint Trail, in the low lands, called always green“.

Copihue, olivillo, hazel and a big variety of endemic species could be watched during the trail. After 45 minutes, the visitors will arrive at Trapial lagoon viewpoint.

The lunch will be in the famous kitchen of Anita Epulef, a recognized chef who will offer recipes of food with local ingredients from the forest and ecological vegetable gardens.

In the afternoon, you will visit a medicinal plants garden with a medic who has ancestral knowledge. The journey will continue in Walungmapu, in shores of Trankurra river, a community space where Walüng organization has the administration. In this place, a ñana (old woman) will receive you in a ruka, a traditional Mapuche house. There, you will be able to take part in a workshop of traditional Mapuche loom or natural fiber.

In the ruka, a young person of the community will share his knowledge about palín, an ancestral Mapuche game. The day will end with the transfer to the rural sectors until the guesthouse for dinner and to sleep.

Day 2: See the wonderful view of the volcanoes

After rural breakfast, you will go to Villarrica National Park by car, and start trekking across the Andean Patagonian forest with many araucarias. The trekking is all day and has medium difficulty. After this, you will go to a family guesthouse for dinner.

During the adventure, the guide will explain different aspects of the territory: geology, flora, fauna, migrations, and additional other local topics

You will take the lunch in Carilafken lagoon, in foothills of Lanín volcano, the highest mountain of Araucanía region with 3,747 meters. This will be the food and rest point where you will enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the mountains and volcanoes around.

Day 3: Weaving workshop

The local guide will pick you up and you will move by car until Loncofilo where the homeowner will show you his experience about the works with sheep, races, breeding methods, wool and more. The visit continues with his daughter, who works with the same wool that he extracted creating different designs in a loom. She will offer a weaving workshop.

Later on, you will go to Trankurra where you will meet an ancestral authority from the Mapuche Community, Camilo Cueñequir, who will share the history about his territory. His wife will cook the lunch with traditional ingredients and products from the native forest and local vegetable gardens.

After lunch, the visit continues in the same community with a workshop about products from the honey and natural herbs. Then, you will get to know a Mapuche young man, who collect seeds from the native forest for their reproduction with local species.

Day 4: Gain knowledge on the Mapuche cosmovision

You will leave Kurarewe to travel to Melipeuco. After breakfast, the trip begins through Maichin river and with the visit to Malalco waterfall. The travel continues by the same valley until Reigolil where you will be received for a kimche, person with wide ancestral knowledge, who will explain part of Mapuche cosmovision. For lunch, you will eat typical products from the Mapuche cuisine and then the trip will continue until Melipeuco. 

Day 5: Trekking in Conguillio National Park

After breakfast, you will be going to Conguillio National Park where you will start the Sierra Nevada trekking, accompanied by the local guide. The circuit highlights are the Andean forest and viewpoints to LLaima volcano.

The Araucaria tree is one of the most primitive in this planet and you will see them in most part of the trail.

The lunch will be in wonderful lookout on the way and then the group will return to Melipeuco for finishing the day with dinner and rest.

Day 6: Observe the Argentinian and Chilean lakes from a plateau

After rural breakfast, you will leave Melipeuco to go to Icalma (in mapuzungun language water mirror). Near the Argentinian border, a local guide will take you to Batea Mahuida, an old volcano which access is administered by Pehuenche communities. Then, you will arrive over a plateau where you will get a spectacular panoramic over the Argentinian and Chilean lakes. You will go up there by car and the entrance depends on the weather conditions and the snow.

The lunch will be in Icalma and, later, the local guide will explain the Pehuenche history through paintings. Next to the lake, the visitors will know the original works wood. The dinner and rest will be in a Pehuenche guesthouse, inside of araucarias tree forest.

Day 7: Meet with an ancestral authority

After breakfast, the travel continues until Lonquimay town, arriving to a longko’s house, an ancestral authority of the community, who will explain the traditional medicine of his people,d he will show his medicine plants garden.

The travel continues until Quinquén, historic Pehuenche community of the territory, where the local people will receive you for lunch. In the afternoon, the local guide from Quinquén will take you through a trail among millennial araucaria trees. The end of the day will be with dinner and rest in front of Galletué lake.

Day 8: Travelling to Temuco

After breakfast, you will travel to Temuco city, through Las Raíces tunnel. This will be the end of the 8 days in Pehuenche territory.

    – If you cancel less than 5 days before the trip to 48 hours before the trip: 65% will be refunded.
    – From 24 hours to 8 hours before: 20% will be refunded.  
    – You will not be refunded if you cancel the trip on the start date.
