Live the Adventure in North Chile!

This tour is a fascinating journey through the altiplano of the extreme north of Chile, embracing the altiplanos of the region of Arica and Parinacota, as well as the whole region of Tarapacá. This area will enable you to see a beautiful nature and a tremendous diversity of flora and fauna. It has ecosystems and species of high conservation importance. You will also discover the true oasis of Pica that includes the Atacama desert, the most arid in the world.

This journey includes a visit of six protected parks such as: Quebrada de Cardones Natural Monument, Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve, Salar de Surire Natural Monument, Isluga Volcano National Park and Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve. You will also be able to know two UNESCO patrimonies of the six declared in Chile, Humbestone and Qhapaq Ñan (which wasmain Andean road). This tour is also an amazing opportunity to meet the Andean people as they live in the altiplano. Together with a local guide, you will be able to explore a pristine region far from the crowds.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arica – Putre 3,500 meters (11,482.94 ft)

The first day of this circuit is a journey of acclimatization, and it will begin in the morning in the city of Arica, with a visit to the fruit and vegetable terminal ASOAGRO. You will then go on the archaeological circuit called “Cerro Sombrero”, and see the geoglyphs of “La Tropilla” and “Danzarines”, and then visit to the archaeological museum of San Miguel de Azapa. After that, you will go to Lluta Valley Viewpoint, Poconchile Village and Church, and go on Candelabro Cactus Trail.

Then you will reach Mallku Village, and make a stop at Copaquilla Pukara Viewpoint and Trail. You will afterwards continue your journey and head towards Zapahuira Tambo, 2 Apachetas Trail, and visit a UNESCO Heritage site (Qhapaq Ñan). This first day will end with Socoroma Village Trail, and Putre High Viewpoint before going to your place of lodging and have dinner.

Day 2
Putre – Lago Chungara 4,517 metros (14,819.55 ft)- Putre

On your second day, you will first go on an excursion to the Lauca National Park, and will visit the “La Gran Caverna” trail and the CONAF nursery “Las Cuevas”. Then you will go to the sector of “Chaku”, and you will see the volcanoes “Payachatas” (Parinacota and Pomerape).

After that, you will go to the viewpoint of the Cotacotani lagoon. You will also see Lake Chungara and visit Parinacota. Then you will dive into the Jurasi hot springs near Putre before returning to your accommodation in Putre.

Day 3
Putre – Salar de Surire 4,250 meters (13,943.57 ft)  – Colchane

You are going to head towards southeast to go on an excursion to Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve, and bofedal trail in the village of Misitune village. Then you are going to see “Diablo Marka” viewpoint and Chuga village, and admire local kimsachata volcanoes (Guallatire, Capurata and Acotango). After that, you will get to see the minor chapel of Ancuta, the village and church of Guallatire, Lauca river bridge and Surire Salt Lake.

You are then going to pass through Chilcaya carabineros control, cross the salt flat and see some flamingos before taking a bath in Polloquere hot springs. This will be followed by an excursion to Isluga Volcano National Park, mocomocone pass, Allavire viewpoint, and Enquelga village. Your last visit of the day will be Isluga village and its church, before going Colchane where you will spend the night.

Schedule: 08:00 am – 18:00 pm

Day 4
Colchane – Cariquima 3,800 meters (12,467.19 ft) – Huara – La Tirana – Pica

You are going to start your day by taking a giant cactus trail in the town of Cariquima, then visit Cariquima museum, before going on a rocky path in the town of Quebe. After that, you will go to a viewpoint in the town of Chusmiza, visit Tarapaca Cerro Unitas, and reach the town of Huara. Afterwards you will visit town and church of La Tirana, the town of Pica, and make a stop at the thermal waters of La Cocha before going to your accommodation for the night.

Day 5
Pica – Humberstone and Santa Laura – Iquique

For this last day you will begin with a geoglyphs trail and a climb Pintados hill, before going on a visit to Pintados museum. Then, you are going to go to Pampa del Tamarugal national reserve, and to the city of Pozo Almonte. Afterwards, you will visit Humberstone and Santa Laura saltpeter trail (which are listed as a UNESCO Heritage), and finally reach Iquique, Chile, where your tour will end.

Schedule: 09:00 am – 16:00 pm

Important Notes

  • You have a few options for this tour: Option 1: The circuit starts in Arica and ends in Iquique (pick-up/drop off from your accommodation).
    Option 2: The circuit begins from Chacalluta airport in Arica, which the program would have a variant at the beginning, to cross only the valley of Lluta, visiting archaeological circuit: the frog, the eagle, giants of Lluta, colcas of huailacan until arriving at Poconchile, then it would go back to normal.
    The circuit may end at Diego Aracena airport in Iquique.
    Option 3: The circuit begins in Iquique, Chile and ends in Arica (pick-up/drop off from your accommodation).
    Option 4: The circuit starts from Diego Aracena airport in Iquique and ends at Chacalluta airport in Arica.
  • The weather during the months of January and February can be rainy, therefore you must bring a raincoat.
  • The weather in July and August in Winter can be snowy, therefore you must bring warm clothes.
  • This tour is for people who are able to walk in altitude.
  • Your physical condition must be compatible with this tour
  • You must show respect for local animals, do not chase or interfere with their nests. Observe, admire and photograph them from a certain distance.
  • Do not cut flowers and never take any cultural elements with you.
  • Avoid marking the route, to leave signs or to scratch the rocks, not to throw garbage.
