Tierra del Fuego island is known for breathtaking fjords, towering snowy mountains and glacier walls, inhospitable Antarctic climate — and its vital, bountiful bird life. Home to the only king penguin colony in South America, Tierra del Fuego is an important refuge for these magnificent birds and for countless other species that live and thrive on the island.
On this 3 day, 2 night trip, experience king penguins up close at the Pinguino Rey Private Park, explore the small, rustic towns scattered across the island, and enjoy the jaw-dropping views of Antarctic Chile.
DAY 1 – Explore Punta Arenas
Welcome to Punta Arenas! After you arrive in the small southern city, you’ll drop your bags off at the Yegua Loca hotel and have time to explore the city, get to know the surrounding area, and prepare for your adventure. Located along the Strait of Magellan, this colorful and historic city is fun to wander and full of hidden gems.
DAY 2 – Meet Royalty at King Penguin Park
After breakfast, a van will pick you up between 7:00-7:30 am to begin your trip to the Pingüino Rey (King Penguin) Private Park. You’ll ferry across the Strait of Magellan to Chilote Bay and dock at Tierra del Fuego Island.
You’ll begin the day with a city tour of Porvenir. Founded by immigrants who flocked to the barren region as part of a 19th century gold rush, Porvenir — literally “Yet to Come” — was named for the hopes and dreams of the city’s founders. Gold mines still operate on the island.
From Porvenir, you’ll continue onward to Pinguino Rey Park. There, you’ll enjoy the day observing the penguins and exploring the park. Your guide will teach you about the amazing colony that contains over 100 penguins distributed over the grassy plains and coastal bay.
Once you have finished exploring the park, you’ll head to Cerro Sombrero (Hat Hill) — a small village near the park — where you’ll explore and eat lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Punta Arenas.
DAY 3 – Say Goodbye to Punta Arenas
In the morning, a van will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the Punta Arenas airport for your flight. If you have a late flight, no problem. Take the day to explore Punta Arenas and coordinate with your guide and driver as needed.
Tierra del Fuego is located within the Antarctic Region. For your king penguin tour Tierra del Fuego, be sure to check the weather and dress appropriately for the frigid climate.
