Itinerary

To begin your exploration of the Atacama, tour Valle de la Luna, or Moon Valley. With eerie rock and sand formations shaped by wind and water, the barren landscape feels otherworldly, and stretches as far as the eye can see. Nearby you’ll experience the Cordillera de la Sal, or Salt Mountains. This ancient lake dried out millions of years ago, and in its place is a white plain and surrounding oddly formed mountains and rocky outcroppings.

After you tour Valle de la Luna and the Salt Mountains, continue your journey to Valle de la Muerte — Death Valley. Here, you’ll experience the desert’s massive sand dunes. Climb the dunes for breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

Next on your itinerary, you’ll hike to Mirador de Ckari. Walk along mild to moderate trails for absolutely stunning views. Encounter the desert’s delicate ecosystems, and keep a look out for the subtle signs of life all around you.

After your hike, you’ll return to the van and travel to Las Tres Marias. The salt and clay-filled Atacama desert is filled with fascinating rock formations. But Las Tres Marias are particularly important to local history and culture. As you look out over the desert landscape, you’ll see three rock forms bent over facing the wind, as if three women are praying, bracing against whatever storm comes their way.

To end the day, you’ll travel to Duna Mayor for the day’s most outstanding view– sunset over the desert. Climb to the top of the dune just as the sun is casting red, gold and pink light over the outstanding and otherworldly landscape. the Principal Dune of the nearby region. Here, you’ll climb to to the top of the dune to watch the sun set over the desert.
