Walk in the Steps of History with a Full Day Ascent of Cerro Quimal

Located approximately 70 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile and west of the Atacama Salt Flats, Cerro Quimal is the highest peak of the Domeyko mountain range.

Even though Cerro Quimal is not as visited as compared to the Licancabur and Juriques volcanoes in the area, it is still visited by hundreds of tourists a year who seek to get a little closer to the Likan-Antai culture and history, or simply to rejoice at the beautiful view of the Atacama Salt Flats, with the gigantic Altiplanic Mountain Range as a backdrop.

For the Likan-Antai tribe, Cerro Quimal is known as a beautiful maiden, sacred and surrounded by legends. Ideal for beginners, the summit of Cerro Quimal located 4280 meters above sea level will offer you one of the best views of the region. During the ascent, you will also be able to see ice penitents, which are large icy waters that are generated naturally as a result of sublimation – in the shape of needles.

On this tour, you will take either one of the 3 routes up the hill – through the North face, which is accessed from the West through the gulch of the Guanacos; through the West face, made up of old mining roads leading up to almost 400 meters; or a direct ascent through the South face. These 3 routes do not have major technical complexities, so it can be climbed indistinctly.

The view may be great, but due to the steep slope of the hill, its ascent must be done very calmly – if you are in a haste, you will get mountain sickness and a lack of oxygen.

Besides, temperatures might go below -10 degrees celsius, so wear more clothing and avoid getting frozen! Join us on this ascent, which was historically done in the past for the celebration of the Waki – a ritual ceremony performed by the Atacameños of the Salar in order to ensure the rains.
