We had a blast on this tour. We were picked up in town and dropped off only a few minutes outside at the ranch, where we were introduced to the horses. From there, we rode for about an hour to the national reserve, Death Valley. We stopped there to sandboard, which was very fun! Definitely know that it is tough work to climb up the sand dune at such a high altitude, but well worth the fun ride down. For those who are snowboarders/skateboarders, note that it is difficult to do turns on the sandboard, it is more of a straight ride down. I of course fell, but the landing was soft in the sand, so there was really nothing to be afraid of. After about 4-5 times up and down the dune, we got back on the horses and rode through the dunes and then back to the ranch. The landscape was spectacular. Our guide the entire time was very friendly and good with the horses. The one thing I would say is that given the uneven terrain, the horses can have small missteps at times, so those who are very nervous or anxious about horsebacking riding should know this in advance. Definitely wear pants and a hat/sunscreen/sunglasses.

This was the most fun experience I had in San Pedro. Juan picked us up and drove us to his beautiful ranch decorated with his own art where he chose horses for us based on our personalities (as he explained later). The ride was easy so we could enjoy the stunning views but the horses also like to gallop if you are into that. Sandboarding was the best part! It is true that climbing up the hill seemed tough because of the altitude but I got used to it quicker than I thought and got to slide down a good amount of times. I fell most of them but sand is a lot softer than it looks so it didn’t hurt at all. On our way back I got to talk more to Juan who answered all of my questions about the horses and the area. I could tell he’s very passionate about what he does and certainly great at it! All horses had a clear response to his directions.

I recommend using a lot of sunscreen (especially on your neck and shoulders) and bringing sunglasses and a hat!

I loved this tour. It was well organized, on-time and everything went very smoothly. Our guide, who owned the horses was a total professional and was in complete control of the horses throughout the ride. He was also informative and a real nice guy. Riding through the desert, the scenery was spectacular, and the horses readily responded to our commands. As for the sandboarding, it was ALOT of fun, and a good workout hiking up the dunes. Easy to learn and get good at after the first few minutes. If you’re even modestly athletic you can do it – I’m 57 and my wife is 61 and we both had no trouble with the sandboards. I highly recommend this tour. Given the availability of numerous tour operators in Atacama, it’s difficult to know who you can trust for a great experience. I’m glad I relied on Ketaka for this – they really delivered a great guide.
