Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Start location: San Pedro de Atacama
End location: Uyuni
Day 1 – Cross the Border to Bolivia and Enjoy Lagoon Sightseeing in the Highlands
After being picked up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama by a minibus at 7:00 am, you will drive to Hito Cajones, on the Bolivian border. There, you will change from minibus to 4W vehicle.
Keep an eye out for Licancabur Volcano just after you cross the border. Near the volcano, you will stop to visit two lagoons: Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde) and White Lagoon (Laguna Blanca). These two bodies of water are some of the most beautiful sites of the Eduardo Avaroa Natural Reserve. The bright color of the Green Lagoon’s water comes from high concentrations of copper.
After that, you will drive in the Salvador Dali Desert to the hot springs at Polques, where you can take a dip. Then, marvel at the volcanic Geysers of the Morning Sun (Géiseres del Sol de Mañana). The spurting water there reaches temperatures of 194°F (90°C). In the afternoon, see the nesting grounds of 30,000 flamingos of three different types at Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada). The flamingos’ red feathers get their colors from the lagoon’s algae that reacts with sunlight.
Finally, you will continue on to the highlands and see their volcanic rocks, colorful mountains and the Stone Tree (El Arbol de Piedra). At night, you will rest at Hotel del Desierto Tayka.
Day 2 – Spot Native Birds and Animals Near Lagoons
The second day of your Uyuni 3 day tour continues to Lagunas Honda, Chiarkota, Hedionda and Cañapa. These lagoons are home to many flamingos, gulls, and Andean ducks and are surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes. You will also see ancient lava flows nearby. Keep an eye out for native animals such as vicuñas, vizcachas, llamas, foxes, Andean pumas, and condors. In the afternoon, the tour takes you to the Necropolis in the village of San Juan de Rosario. At night, you will stay at Hotel Piedra Tayka.
Day 3 – Gaze at the Largest Salt Flats in the World at Uyuni and See Its Attractions
On the last day of your tour, admire the Zepita Galaxies that were created 40,000 years ago in Lake Minchín in the stalactites of sub-aquatic bacteria. Then, get ready for the main event of this Uyuni 3 day tour: the Uyuni Salt Flats! In addition to amazing panoramic views, you can also admire Cactus Valley (Echinopsis) and Incahuasi Island. There is a wonderful lookout point at the top of the island. During the afternoon, you will get to see Ojos de Salar (Salt Flat Eyes), the Salt Mines, the Salt Museum, the town of Colchani, and the train cemetery. In Colchani, there are salt handicrafts you can buy. At 16:00, your Uyuni 3 day tour comes to an end in Uyuni.
