Horseback Riding Santiago Chile – Day Trip to the Andes

This tour requires a minimum of 2 people. Email us at if you are traveling solo and we can see if there is a group leaving on your requested date!

  • Ride with local Chilean cowboys
  • Explore the Andes mountains on horseback!
  • Your booking supports the cowboys’ community-based tourism efforts

Explore the amazing Andes mountains in the hills of Farellones outside of Santiago. You will depart at 10 and head northeast to Fundo Santa Matilde, Farellones – an area that most tourists do not see. During the drive, your guide will tell you about the region and the ride you are about to take. You will meet your local cowboy (arriero) guides and horses at a casona (old wood cabin), mount up, and head for the hills!

There are many paths that this tour can take, but all lead to great views! On the camino bajo, you will end up in a valley, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. On the camino alto, you will get to the sub-summit of one of the area’s many mountains and get a great view of the valley below, and be eye-to-eye with some of the tallest peaks in the area.

No matter your group size, you will have a guide and at least one arriero accompanying you. For larger groups, there will be multiple arrieros, who are always available to help guide and steer the horses. Note that they tend to be quiet, but are friendly if you want to ask them about the surrounding nature or about growing up in the area.

Community Impact

The arrieros that guide these tours have lived in this area their entire lives, and have seen a lot of the area’s economic opportunities, as well the younger generations, migrate to Santiago. A few years ago, they began working with the operator of this tour to create locally-guided horseback riding tours, as well as camping and team-building trips. The income helps them to stay in their home and preserve their traditions. Keteka partnered with the operator and the arrieros in 2015 and we help them with online promotion and marketing in an effort to connect more travelers like you with their tours.
