The Lauca Biosphere Reserve offers one of the most fascinating journeys in the altiplano of the extreme north of Chile. Lauca Biosphere Reserve is made up of Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve and Salar de Surire Natural Monument, with 358,262 hectares of protected wilderness areas administered by the National Forestry Corporation.

What makes Lauca Biosphere Reserve unique is that it belongs to the biodiversity of “The Tropical Andes,” one of the richest and most diverse ecological regions on earth. It has an important cultural heritage and a stunning ecosystem. The Aymara culture is characterized by its way of life that adapted to climatic and geographical conditions. It maintains and revives ancestral traditions. This region is a unique bio geographic and bio climatic region in Chile.

By hiking within the Lauca Biosphere Reserve with specialized native guides, you will have the opportunity to be in contact with Aymara people, and visit places full of nature and peace. Your Aymara guides know every corner of the area and spectacular views of this Andean territory, making the circuit even more authentic.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arica, Chile – Putre 3,500 meters (11,482.94 ft)

The first day of this circuit is a journey of acclimatization, and it will begin in the morning in the city of Arica, with a visit to the fruit and vegetable terminal ASOAGRO. You will then go on the archaeological circuit called “Cerro Sombrero”, and see the geoglyphs of “La Tropilla” and “Danzarines”, and then visit to the archaeological museum of San Miguel de Azapa. After that, you will go to Lluta Valley Viewpoint, Poconchile Village and Church, and go on Candelabro Cactus Trail.

Then you will reach Mallku Village, and make a stop at Copaquilla Pukara Viewpoint and Trail. You will afterwards continue your journey and head towards Zapahuira Tambo, 2 Apachetas Trail, and visit a UNESCO Heritage site (Qhapaq Ñan). This first day will end with Socoroma Village Trail, and Putre High Viewpoint before going to your place of lodging and have dinner.

Day 2
Putre – Surire Salt Flat 4,250 meters (13,943.57 ft)- Putre

You are going to head towards southeast to go on an excursion to Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve, and bofedal trail in the village of Misitune village. Then you are going to see “Diablo Marka” viewpoint and Chuga village, and admire local kimsachata volcanoes (Guallatire, Capurata and Acotango). After that, you will get to see the minor chapel of Ancuta, the village and church of Guallatire, Lauca river bridge and Surire Salt Lake.

You are then going to pass through Chilcaya carabineros control, cross the salt flat and see some flamingos before taking a bath in Polloquere hot springs. Your last visit of the day will be CONAF Surire nursery where you can observe Vizcachas (native fauna). Then you will go back to Putre, lodging and dinner.

Day 3
Putre – Chungara Lake 4,517 meters (14,819.55 ft) – Arica, Chile

On this last day you are first going to go on Excursion to Lauca National Park, visit “La Gran Caverna” trail, and CONAF nursery “Las Cuevas”. Then you will head towards the sector of “Chaku” (ancestral technique for capturing vicuñas), and see the “Payachatas” volcanoes (Parinacota and Pomerape). After that, you will go to Cotacotani lagoon viewpoint, to a trail in Lake Chungara, and visit the Church and village of Parinacota. You will afterwards take the ceremonial pukara hill trail in the village of Parinacota, and dive into Jurasi hot springs near Putre before going back to the city of Arica, Chile.

What To Bring

  • Passengers must carry basic equipment:
  • Sunglasses with UV filter
  • A windproof and waterproof jacket
  • Backpack (35 to 45 liters)
  • Hiking boots, good cane boots are essential to prevent sprains and slips
  • Hat or cap
  • Long pants and long sleeves to protect yourself from the sun and ultraviolet rays, plants and slight bites
  • Sun block and lip balm.

Important Notes

  • The weather during the months of January and February can be rainy, therefore you must bring a raincoat.
  • The weather in July and August in Winter can be snowy, therefore you must bring warm clothes.
  • This tour is for people who are able to walk in altitude and in the altiplano.
  • Your physical condition must be compatible with this tour
  • You must show respect for local animals, do not chase or interfere with their nests. Observe, admire and photograph them from a certain distance.
  • Do not cut flowers and never take any cultural elements with you.
  • Avoid marking the route, to leave signs or to scratch the rocks, not to throw garbage.
  • Be punctual, responsible and do not violate laws and order during the experience.
  • Please inform us of any problem, inconvenience or situation that could become an even greater problem.
  • It is your responsibility to determine that your physical condition is good enough to undertake the trip.
