From ancient ruins to landscapes that will make you feel like you are on the surface of the moon, or cast in an American western movie, these rides give you a fun and authentic look at the amazing Atacaman landscape.
Surrounded by strange rock and salt formations, molded by thousands of years of wind and water, will make you feel like you are on the surface of the moon. This tour leads you through sand dunes near the Salt Mountain Range, down paths that are only accessible by foot or by horse. You will take a break in the heart of the valley, where you can rest and take pictures. On the way back, you will pass through a stunning canyon. You can dictate the pace of the ride, going faster if you wish, or taking it easy and enjoying the scenery.
Cross rivers and ride along huge sand dunes in one of the area’s most amazing rides. On the way, you will get a fantastic view of the San Pedro valley (an Andean depression). You will also ride through the Catarpe Valley, climb to the Toro at the top of the cliff – the highest part of the salt cordillera. After a break in the valley, you will ride through the famous death valley dunes.
As you follow the Catarpe valley in the north of San Pedro, you will discover the river San Pedro, where some of the area’s only vegetation grows. Here, there is an incredible contrast between the colors of the desert and the green of the valley. On the ride back, you will pass through Devil’s Ravine (la quebrada del diablo), which has spectacular rock formations. This narrow ravine is a natural labyrinth, and you will feel like you are in an American western movie.
The Spanish established their first colonial village of the area in Beter. The village is long since abandoned, but the dry climate has preserved these ruins remarkably, albeit almost buried them in sand. You can still find ancient ceramics and other artifacts just under the surface of the sand. The ride continues to the ruins of Tulor, an Atacaman village that is more than 3,000 years old. Thanks to an investigative project that was allowed to take 10% of the sand off of the site, you can visit this ancient village as a living museum.
