This trip is woven together by a collection of activities specifically designed to get you outside the tourist zones and directly interacting with the people of Colombia.

Bienvenido a Cartagena. We’ll be at the airport ready to take you back to our exclusive hotel (10-minute drive). Unpack, relax and settle-in. We’ll meet at 3pm for a short intro and then the afternoon is yours – wander the charming old town, marvel at the colorful colonial buildings or simply relax by the pool, sip a cocktail and view this vibrant coastal city from above. Tonight, you’ll get to know better you fellow travelers over a unique dining experience we’ve organized in Cartagena’s old town.

Today we hire our very own private speed boat and set off for some island-hopping around the oh so very tropical Rosario Islands. We’ll swim, we’ll snorkel, we’ll sunbathe and generally enjoy the pristine beaches and crystal-clear sea. But be sure to save some of that energy for later. We’ll head back to Cartagena and kick-off the evening with a Champeta (Afro-Caribbean) dance workshop before hitting-up the local bar scene to try out our new found moves.

On day 3 of the Colombia Tour, the itinerary is wide open for you to entertain your own personal interests. You could head out of town to the nearby Bazurto market or Palenque village to get a better perspective of real life Colombia. Or if mud baths are your thing there’s the Totum mud volcano. If you prefer staying closer to home, it’s well worth wandering the backstreets of Getsemani – the grittier less touristy part of Cartagena – to check out the iconic street graffiti. This evening we regroup over a spot of rum tasting (when in Cartagena!) and share stories of our earlier exploits.

It’s an early start as we say goodbye to Cartagena and make the 4-hour bus journey towards Parque Nacional Tayrona – a great opportunity to catch up on sleep after a few late nights. Our hotel is located in the most tranquil of natural settings – amidst the lush Colombian jungle – and so today is all about relaxation. We have an awesome pool, outdoor jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, luxurious restaurant, cocktail bar – and if that’s not quite enough – we’ve also lined up a massage. And don’t worry, if relaxation isn’t quite your thing (you know who you are!) there’s the option to go hike the neighboring jungle.

We can’t think of many better feelings than waking up knowing you’re going to spend the day inside this exotic, otherworldly, Colombian national park. It’s epic! There’s 2 ways to the beach. The first involves a 1-hour hike (or horse-ride) along a scenic coastal trail. And the second is the fairly challenging and much less travelled 3-hour jungle hike which passes through ‘Pueblito’ – the Kogi indigenous village, still inhabited to this very day. It’s absolutely breathtaking! Whichever route you choose we’ll regroup at the picture postcard beach and spend the afternoon basking in its sun-drenched shores.

Time for a change of scene as we make our way to Santa Marta airport for the short 1-hour flight to Colombia’s bustling capital – Bogota. After checking into the hotel, the afternoon’s free for you to explore the city however you please. We recommend wandering the charming old town – La Candelaria – and then taking the metro cable up the impressive Monserrate mountain where you’ll be treated to spectacular panoramic city views. In the evening we’ll try out the lively Bogota nightlife including the local ‘sport’ of Tejo (let’s just say it involves beer and gunpowder)!

Today we sample Colombian life outside the urban sprawl by heading to the neighboring & much smaller town of Zipaquira – famous locally for its hugely impressive underground salt cathedral (WAY cooler than it sounds!) We’ll spend a fairly relaxed day visiting the cathedral, exploring the town, tasting the local delicacies and – one of our favorite pastimes – people watching! We see out our final evening in style by heading to the very hip & trendy local hotspot of Plaza Usaquen, where we feast at one of our all-time favorite restaurants.

Day 8 – ADIOS

How quickly time flies when you’re having fun! Yes, sadly you’re now at the end of your  Colombia Tour – but what an awesome week it’s been. You’ve danced Champeta, hiked through jungles, swam pristine oceans, felt the buzz of mega cities, mingled with locals, eat top-notch food and met many interesting people along the way. After one final breakfast we’ll take you to the airport to begin your journey home. We hope you’ll leave with a sense that you’ve experienced something special and that in amongst all that fun you’ve gained a genuine insight into the real and authentic Colombia.
