Named a Colombian National Monument in 1954, the village has dedicated the last 60 years to preservation and small-town tourism. This has allowed the Villa to flourish into an enchanting weekend getaway with a thriving artisan community, cozy hotels, and nearby trails and archaeological sites.
Encounter beautifully preserved colonial architecture, explore Colombia’s picturesque countryside, and fall asleep in a charming boutique hotel on this Villa de Leyva overnight getaway.
Duration: 2 days, one night
Start & End Points: Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Bogota
Trip Type: Private tour
Day 1: Explore Villa de Leyva
Your day begins with hotel pick-up in Bogota at 7:00 am. Drive 2.5 hours to Ráquira, where you’ll have a chance to stretch your legs and explore the colorful village famous for its long tradition of pottery work.
In the late morning, travel to El Infiernito (The Little Hell) a pristine archaeological site and pre-Spanish observatory used for agricultural purposes. Learn the fascinating history and why Spanish conquistadors considered the observatory an inferno. Next, travel to Blue Pond, a lively blue water reservoir and important water source for local farmers.
You will arrive at Villa de Leyva at around 14:30 pm. Check in to your charming hotel, and then take time to explore the colonial village. We recommend you start your adventure at the Plaza Mayor. Plazas are typical indicators of Spanish colonial town planning, but the Plaza Mayor at Villa de Layva is anything but typical. At 46,000 square feet, it is considered the largest colonial town plaza in all of South America. Explore the grounds, take a peek at the breathtaking colonial church facing the plaza, and find exceptional artesanal goods in the nearby shops.
At night, enjoy dinner on the town at one of the Villa’s many charming restaurants.
Day 2: Choose your own Adventure
Today is yours to enjoy Villa de Leyva and the surrounding countryside as you’d like. The village is tiny, but has abundant opportunities for exploration and adventure. Hike in nearby natural parks, go horseback riding, join a bird-watching tour, or head to nearby archaeological sites for a look at the region’s pre-Spanish history and culture.
Your driver will pick you up at the hotel at 17:00 pm for your drive back to Bogota.
