Description

In the northern most corner of Colombia, the Alta Guajira is an endless horizon of dry forests and deserts combined with stunning blue seas, creating dramatic contrasting scenery. Inhabiting Punta Gallinas are the native Wayuú, and you will have the opportunity to share their culture, experience everyday life on the rancherías, and observe their well conserved customs, clothing, food, and cultural practices. This tour is packed with beaches, hammock camping, hiking, visiting cultural sites, stunning flora, and fauna.

Itinerary

Day 1
Meet in Riohacha.
Departure to Manaure.
Visit Las Charcas, el Pilón de Sal. (salt excavation site)
Arrival at Uribia, dinner and accommodation in Hotel Juyasirain.

Day 2
Breakfast before departing to La Serranía de Cocinas, stopping at el Cerro de la Teta.
Visit the beaches at Táparo, Venezuela.
Lunch in the Wososopo Ranchería.
Short hike to Wuesosopo border landmark and to the Indigenous Cemetery.
Dinner and accommodations in a chinchorro. (hammock)

Day 3
Breakfast before departing to Puerto López, stopping at La Flor de la Guajira.
Visit Bahía de Cocinetas, Castilletes, Bahía de Tukakas, and the Warpana ranchería.
Lunch at Warpana.
Visit the Meteorite, the ruins, and beach of Puerto López.
Dinner and sleep in a chinchorro.

Day 4
Breakfast. Departure to Nazareth, stopping at Siapana, Tópia, Puerto Inglés, and Punta Espada.
Lunch at Siapana.
Arrival at Nazareth, where you can do some shopping.
Dinner before sleeping in chinchorro.

Day 5
Breakfast before visiting the National Natural Park, La Macuira. Hike to Ipakiwou Stream.
Lunch in Nazareth.
Departure to Punta Gallinas. Visit Puerto Estrella, the Los Patos dune and lake, the Taróa dune, and the Punta Gallinas lighthouse.
Dinner and accommodations in chinchorro.

Day 6
Breakfast. Boat tour through Bahía Hondita, visiting the beaches on the island and Punta Soldado.
Lunch at Punta Aguja before visiting the beaches there.
Dinner and accommodations in chinchorro.

Day 7
Breakfast. Departure to Cabo de la Vela, stopping at the Taróa sand dunes, Bahía Honda, Pusheo, Bahía Portete, Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Bolívar, and the Eolic Wind Park.
Lunch at Cabo de la Vela. Visit the beach of Pilón de Azúcar and watch the sunset at the lighthouse.
Dinner and accommodations in chinchorro.

Day 8
Breakfast before departure back to Riohacha.

  • Accommodation. Either in a regular bed or in a chinchorro (typical handwoven hammock) according to the availability of the destination.

Important Notes

This tour is adventurous and highly demanding; it lacks the usual comfort of more conventional tours. Water is scarce, and the little electricity available is obtained from gas generators and solar panels. Roads are unpaved and dusty. The sun and the heat are very intense during the day, and temperatures drop dramatically during the night. There are no beds nor conventional hotels. Sleeping usually involves chinchorros (handwoven hammocks) hung at Wayuú villages (rancherías) camping sites, or tourist inns. You must be physically fit for this trip; it not suitable for people with any sort of physical handicap, nor for children under the age of 8 or adults over the age of 70. Although medical facilities (hospitals) are available, it is not recommended that anyone with a serious or chronic health condition participate in this tour. Temperatures range between 25° and 30°C.
