Lost City Tour Colombia (5 Days)

  • Trek into The Lost City, the most extensive archaeological site found in the upper basin.
  • Explore an ancient city founded around 1000 AD.

The Lost City Archaeological Park (Ciudad Perdida) is located 900 and 1200 meters above sea level, on the north side of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Among the 26 archaeological sites so far found in Buritaca River Basin, Lost City seems to be the most extensive and monumental, therefore it is assumed it was the political power among the all villages located in the upper basin.

Although it is estimated that Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City) was founded around 1000 AD, hundreds of years before Machu Picchu, recent research has found the oldest residential areas are approximately 650 AD and inhabited until at least 1100 or 1200 AD. Some archaeologists believe that in the sixteenth century Ciudad Perdida may have had 1500 – 2000 inhabitants. The use of circles on platforms, open spaces, circulation, and movement in the villages are elements of Tairona architecture. These striking elements can be found in the extensive network of roads, internal stairs, and platforms of The Lost City.
