Go on an Amazing Horseback Riding Tour from Bogota!

On this tour, you will have the amazing opportunity to ride Colombian horses, also known as “Criollos”. This breed is famous for its endurance capacities and its ability to live in extreme conditions. Criollos are intelligent, willing, and sensitive. These horses have a smoother stride, called “Trocha” similar to what is internationally called a “gaited horse”. This makes the rider feel more comfortable and less tired after the ride.

You will see some breathtaking views and explore a stunning nature, far from the bog cities. This tour is not done on specific dates, therefore you can ask for a date, and we will tell you if there is a possibility on this date. It is easier for the operator to do the tour on weekdays but it is also possible to do it on weekends. Everything depends on the availability of the horses.

Itinerary

Day 1: Leave Bogota and start riding!

You will be picked you up from your hotel in the morning and you will then head by car towards Villa de Leyva. After a three-hour ride, you will reach the hotel where you will spend your two nights. During this journey, you will learn about the life of the local people and you will try some typical sweets. After that, you will have lunch. Then, you will begin your horse ride. Get ready to explore the mountainous area of the Ráquira region!

There are many small adventurous trails going to the top of those mountains. You will pass through some oak forests and brooks. During the ride, you will see some beautiful views of the mountain range and the valleys of Villa De Leyva, Ráquira, and Tinjacá. You will then visit a typical small rural town (San Miguel De Sema). There you can visit the church, admire the typical architecture and eat some sweets. You will ride for about four hours, and there is going to be a lot of canter but not very much gallop.

Day 2: Go on a ride to Fuquene Lake

After a good breakfast and a 30 minutes’ ride by car, you then will begin the day’s ride. Today, you are going to go up to the mountain range, and take various unpaved roads or trails. While getting close to the top of the mountains, you will see some beautiful landscapes behind you. After crossing the mountain range, a new valley will be right in front of you. From there, you will be able to observe Fúquene Lake.

Until the 1970’s, Laguna de Fúquene was Colombia’s biggest lake. Today, only 3,000 hectares are left from the original 10,000 hectares. This flat lake was dried and filled with land to gain acreage for agriculture and stock farming activities. There you will stop to enjoy the landscapes, let the horses rest, eat snacks, and rest a little bit. You will then have a late and succulent lunch. The horse ride will take around four hours.

After lunch at around 15:00, if you are tired, you can go back to your hotel or do a short visit of Villa de Leyva. It is a small town that amazingly preserves its memories from old colonial times and expresses the best of Spanish influence. It was founded in 1572 and built according to Spanish architectural norms. Even the location of the city (in a valley) seems to be an emotional encounter of the New World with Spanish places.

Day 3: Back to Bogota

You will go a hike for one to two hours or visit Ráquira. After that, you will travel back to Bogota and will stop in the middle of the drive for a nice lunch in a restaurant with a beautiful view. This will be the end of this amazing horseback riding Colombia tour!
