Start and end location: Nuqui
Availability: Year-round (July-November is the best season for whale watching, for an extra fee)
Day 1 – Visit the Fishing Village of Jurubira and Hike to Hot Springs
Once you arrive to Nuqui, you will meet the Community Tourism Alliance coordinator, who will show you to a boat. Your jungle adventure begins right off the bat! First, you will go to the Afro-Colombian community of Jurubira. The inhabitants of this lovely fishing village cultivate “zoteas” gardens in old canoes raised on stilts. The village is right outside Utria National Park.
Next, you will enjoy a guided jungle hike to local hot springs. Sit back and relax in the warm water, then return to the boat to go to your eco-hotel. After eating dinner at the hotel, you can relax your own private beach or go exploring in the jungle that surrounds the hotel.
Day 2 – Explore Utria National Park’s Bay and Relax on the Island of Playa Blanca
In the morning, you will meet your guide in the hotel lobby and hop on a boat to go to Utria National Park. The protected bay is one of the world’s best places for whale watching, as humpback whales migrate there between July and November to give birth and raise newborns.
You’ll enjoy a guided tour to the Visitor Center. Then, you can walk through the mangroves on a wooden path and learn about the ecosystem. Later on, enjoy a guided hike through the forest of the national park to a secluded beach. From there, a boat will pick you up and take you to the small island of Playa Blanca. Enjoy a tasty lunch there, then explore the island, snorkel over the lively coral reefs, or rest on the pristine beach. You’ll go back by boat and rest in your eco-hotel in the evening.
Day 3 – Observe Rare Animals on a Jungle Hike and Visit an Indigenous Community
Bright and early, you’ll go by boat to Jurubira. Then, you will go on a 2-hour hike deep into the rainforest to reach an indigenous community. Spot exotic species, tropical birds, monkeys, and medicinal plants. Once you reach the indigenous community, you will learn about their daily life and how they live in balance with nature. You’ll return to Jurubira in the afternoon by taking a traditional canoe. From there, you will be picked up to go back to the eco-hotel.
Day 4 – Go to the Nuqui Airport
In the morning, you will have breakfast and return by boat to the town of Nuqui. From there, you can catch a flight back to Medellin.
