Experience and see some of Costa Rica’s rarest bird species on this all-inclusive birding tour!
Encounter and discover a wide diversity of bird species with a trained local guide. This tour is absolutely ideal for all bird lovers and watchers because of the high amount of diversity that Costa Rica offers.
All guides on this tour are highly trained experts at bird spotting and can offer you sights of some of the more rare birds in the area. Locations that you will visit include the beautiful Braulio Carrillo trails, Sarapiqui lowlands, and the Turrialba mountains.
Other locations include the San Gerardo de Dota close to the Pacific Slope and the Talamanca Mountain range.
DAY 1. Transfer from Juan Santamaria International airport to Hotel Bougainvillea. Free day to enjoy the surrounding area.
DAY 2. The morning will start with an early transfer to the Sarapiqui rain forest located in the lowlands of the Caribbean of Costa Rica. On the way, you will stop at the foot of the mountains of Braulio Carrillo Park with a local bird guide and you will be guided amongst the unique presence of mix flocks, dull-mantled Antbird, Nightingale Wren and various other species. Around noon, you will then check into the Selva Lodge.
The Sarapiqui area has more than half of Costa Rica’s bird species and so you will have many opportunities to spot rare birds at the gardens and forest reserve. In the late afternoon enjoy a private birding hike and try to spot the Violaceous trogon, Squirrel Cuckoo, Rufous Motmot and the very rare Sunbittern.
DAY 3. Start your morning with a private guided bird hike at the biological station of La Selva. At the biological station you will have the chance to spot the Broad-billed Motmot, Antshrike, Currasaw and Red-billed pigeon. In addition, there is a grand variety of hummingbirds in the area. On lucky days, there are even Snowy Cotingas and Green Macaws around.
Later in the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to hike around the Nature Pavilon and get lost in the beauty of the area and it’s huge diversity of birds.
DAY 4. Private transfer to Rancho Naturalista near Turrialba. This area is home to many species of birds that are on the ‘want-to-see’ list of many birders. Some speciality birds in the area include the Tawny-chested Flycatcher, Quail-dove, White-crowned Manakin, Spotted Antbird and Gray-headed Piprites.
DAY 5. If guides are available, a private tour will be given with one of the birding experts at the lodge. Please note that the private tour is not guaranteed because the number of expert guides is limited at the lodge..
DAY 6. Begin the day with a transfer to the San Gerardo de Dota Area and check in at the Savegre Lodge. All meals are included on this day. In this area there are many rare species such as the Resplendent Quetzal, Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Spotted Wood-Quail and Collared Restart.
DAY 7. Go on a private birding tour with a local expert.
DAY 8. Transfer to the Carara area and check in at the Hotel Cerro Lodge. Later in the afternoon, enjoy a Guacalillo Mangrove birding tour and spot species such as the Mangrove Warbler, Vireo and American Pigmy Kingfisher.
DAY 9. Take a guided birding walk at the famous Carara National Park and look for famous bird species such as the Great Tinamou, Riverside Wren and the Black-hooded Ant-shrike.
End the day with a transfer to San Jose and have an overnight at Hotel Buena Vista, close to the airport.
