This chocolate tour is associated with CONOCADO, the national confederation of Dominican cacao producers. There are two tour options: one from the Bloque in Hato Mayor to the farmlands of Vicentillo, and the other from Bloque in El Seibo to the farmlands of Los Botados. The tour starts at 9:00a.m in the Bloque (processing plant for cocoa) where a guide (and a translator if needed) greets and begins the tour with a cup of hot chocolate and an introduction of what the day will entail. There is a full tour of the Bloque: reception, fermentation, natural and artificial drying, and exportation. From there you’ll journey to the country side and take a tour of the farm lands of cocoa. You’ll be given the opportunity to participate in planting and cutting the pods off the tree, as well as a chance to taste raw cocoa. After a break in the gazebo with fruit and hot chocolate, you’ll be taken to make cocoa as a souvenir to take home.
After the tour, a group of local women provide an authentic Dominican cuisine for the you to enjoy. The tour normally ends around 12:30/1:00 p.m.
The Tour that is from El Seibo is about 1 hour and half to get to from Punta Cana, an hour from La Romana. Hato Mayor is an hour and a half from Santo Domingo. Tourist are expected to have their own transportation to and from the Tour.
If you interested in spending a bit more time in the area, the community offers a cabin where people can stay and spend the night, and where meals are provided during your stay. Additionally, the community offers horseback ridding excursion to a river where people can swim, relax and enjoy the authentic life of the Dominican Republic.
