Day 2: Pululahua National Reserve
You will embark on a horse ride after breakfast, through the Pululahua volcanic crater, this time at day-light – which will show its constantly changing sceneries and huge biodiversity. While circling the central lava cone, you will witness volcanic history and nature, interesting geological formations, mineral avalanches blooming with wild orchids and traditional Andean agriculture. You will also have the option to enjoy an outdoor Jacuzzi under the stars after dinner should your body require it.
Day 3: Pululahua National Reserve – Aguacatal
You will start this day along cloud-forest covered mountain slopes, passing by deep gorges, carved by lava streams thousands of years ago to enter the narrow Valley of the Rio Blanco – where with its warm and tropical climate you will find coffee trees, fields of sugar cane and lots of tropical fruits along the way. You will also pass by the pre-Inca-fortress Portalanza in the afternoon, before arriving at Aguacatal, the farm with cozy wooden cabins that will provide you accommodation for the night.
Day 4: Aguacatal – Guayllabamba River Valley – Aguacatal
On the 4th day, after breakfast, you will ride along and above the dramatically beautiful Guayllabamba river valley, combining steep adventurous climbs through dense vegetation with gallop stretches on mountain ridges, overlooking the winding gorges, grave hillocks, terrace hills and 1300-year old stone carvings. As you zigzag through dense forests and bushland, cross pristine water streams and wind through ancient paths, you will then make your way back into the volcano to spend the night there.
Day 5: Aguacatal – Quitu-Cara – Aguacatal
On day 5, you will ride through the narrow ridge between Rio Blanco and Rio Tanache, before arrive to the village of Quitu-Cara, where you will have lunch before returning back to Aguacatal for the night.
Day 6: Aguacatal – Yungilla Village
On day 6, you will start your day by going westwards climbing through forests of bamboo and passing over narrow mountain ridges with spectacular views before reaching the village of Yungilla, where a cottage camp awaits you. This is also where you will have a bird’s eye view of cloud-forest covered mountains and valleys. Yungilla village is dedicated to a self-sustaining community-tourism project for many years, and for those who are interested to know more about sustainable development, there is a lot to learn.
Day 7: Yungilla Village – Pelagallo
This day will see you getting a better understanding of cheese and marmalade production, before riding along the ridge and then diving into the northwestern cloud forests and the land of the Tucans. You will emerge on the other side to more spectacular Andean viewpoints, before arriving at Pelagallo, the private guest house of Marcelo and Maritza. This is where you will spend the night.
Day 8: Pelagallo – Quito (only for 8-day tour travelers)
You will have a relaxed return ride to the ranch, while overlooking the places you had been to, from up high. This will be an easy day with time to let impressions sink. For 8-day tour travelers, you will have a farewell drink and will return to Quito around 16:00 pm.
Day 9: Pelagallo – Cloud Forest – Quito
For those who opt to stay for an additional day, you will be taken into the Cloud Forest by car to end your Andean riding experience on a good note. You will arrive at a lodge which allows a 360-degree view on the vivid bird and plant life, surrounded by hundreds of colorful hummingbirds. There is also an option to tour the Bellavista reserve, before lunch and the return back to Quito. It is estimated that you will arrive in Quito by 16:00 pm.
