Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Tuxtla Gutierrez and Meet your Guide
Arrive at Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport where a private shuttle will be waiting to take you to your hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas. Check into your hotel and meet your birding guide Rodrigo. After dropping off your bags, your group will meet in the lobby and walk to dinner*.

Day 2: Travel to Lagos de Montebello National Park 
Enjoy 7:00 am breakfast at hotel, then check out and leave for your eco-lodge at Lagos de Montebello National Park. Home to 59 mineral-rich and brightly colored purple, turquoise, and even red lakes, lush pine forest, and two Mayan archaeological sites, the National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After lunch, hike well-maintained trails through the stunning landscapes, and go birding with Rodrigo for the afternoon. In the evening, you’ll meet for dinner at the lodge and have the night to relax.

Day 3: Go Birding in Lagos de Montebello National Park
After 7:00 am breakfast, spend the day birdwatching in the park. Head to the nearby town of Las Nubes for lunch* then hit the trails in the afternoon for more birding and hiking. In the evening, meet at the hotel for dinner*.

Day 4: Boat on the Lacantun River. 
After an early 6:30 am breakfast, set out on a private boat tour of the Lacantun River to see observe of the region with your local expert guides. Enjoy the relaxing day on the river and add a few more birds to your Life List. Drive to the eco-lodge for lunch and have the afternoon free to relax before dinner*.

Day 5: Explore the Yaxchilan Mayan Ruins
After 6:30 breakfast at the lodge, take a boat ride along the Usumacinta River to the Yaxchilan Ruins for an archaeological tour and birding with local expert guides. (Be sure to take water and snacks!) Yaxchilan was once a major city at the edge of the Mayan kingdom, and in addition to outstanding architecture, you’ll also encounter detailed hieroglyphics detailing the history of the Mayan dynasties.

Return to our Lodge for late lunch* then check out andleave for Rio Lacanja. There, check into the eco-lodge and unwind before dinner.

Day 6: See the Murals at Bonampak and Drive to Palenque
Enjoy 6:30 breakfast at the lodge, then drive to the nearby Bonampak site for an archaeological tour with local expert guides. (Be sure to take water and snacks.) The sight is famous for its detailed and colorful murals — among the best preserved Mayan murals in existence. The murals depict stories of war, sacrifice, and important historic events.

After exploring the ruins and murals with an expert guide, return to the hotel for a late lunch. Check out and drive to your hotel in Palenque. Here, take a swim, go birdwatching in the gardens, or relax. In the evening, enjoy dinner* and a presentation on Palenque by your expert guide.

Day 7: Tour the Palenque Ruins
Enjoy 7:00 A.M.  breakfast at our hotel then set out for a private early morning tour of the Palenque archaeological site with your expert guide. Here, explore the outstanding city and marvel at it’s sophisticated architecture, sculpture, and carvings — considered among the most refined work produced by the Mayans.

In the late morning, return to your hotel to relax and refresh before checking out and heading to lunch. In the afternoon, drive to Villahermosa where you’ll check into your hotel and head to dinner.

Day 8: Say Goodbye to the Chiapas Lowlands
Today, you’ll say goodbye to your guides and fellow travelers. Your birding and archaeology tour has officially coming to a close.  You’ll have the opportunity to return to San Miguel with your guides, leave directly for the US or Canada, or continue your stay in Tabasco.
