Chiapas Mountain Biking Experience: Stunning Landscapes and Indigenous Pueblos

Set out on a unique experience, biking along the Chiapas mountains through indigenous pueblos of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán. On this excursion, you’ll get to know one of Mexico’s most fascinating and culturally rich corners, where the Maya-Tzotzil people still uphold and preserve Mayan culture dating back thousands of years.

The route consists of cross-country (XC) trails and stretches of asphalt, along which you’ll encounter spectacular views and stunning biodiversity. Stop along important cultural sites, and enjoy a traditional snack in Zinacantán!

From Tuxtla Gutiérrez: 7:00 am – 17:00 pm
From San Cristóbal: 8:00 am – 14:00 pm

Start/End Location: Hotel pick-up/drop-off from Tuxtla Gutiérrez or San Cristóbal

Difficulty Level: Moderate. Off-road biking experience necessary

Itinerary 

Today, you’ll bike cross-country and along stretches of asphalt and stop along the mountain communities’ important and distinctive sites.  You’ll first stop to see the sacred temple of San Juan Baptista, where you’ll encounter the blend of Catholicism and Mayan religion.

Later, bike towards the town of Chamula, where you’ll visit the local market, known for its bright colors and bartering. Set out along local shared trails that demonstrate the essence of live and culture in Chamula. The trails wind around the small town and pass beside spectacular overlooks.

After leaving Chamula, you’ll bike towards the town of Zinacantán, where you’ll enjoy a traditional tortilla with cheese prepared in an unusual way unique to Zinacantán. After enjoying your meal, you’ll visit the San Lorenzo Church and explore the town before biking onward the end location.
