Begin your day trip from Merida to Uxmal and Kabah with hotel pick-up in Merida and transfer to Uxmal (approximately a 1-hour drive). In Uxmal, you’ll explore the extensive city with your guide. There are 15 groups of buildings that stretch approximate 1 square mile (2 square kilometers), among them the Magician’s pyramid, the ball court, the convent, the great pyramid, and the governor’s palace.
This site is particularly known for the way it differs from other nearby Mayan sites. While most are built near natural water sources, Uxmal has a series of artificial cisterns that store rainwater. Built in the hillsides, it offers an outstanding look at the “Puuc” archaeological style.
From Uxmal, you’ll travel 15 miles (22 kilometers) along a pre-Hispanic road connecting Uxmal to Kabah, stopping for lunch along the way. Upon arrival at Kabah, you’ll notice that the .75 mile city is surrounded by grassy mounds — these are the remains of buildings not yet excavated, and offer insight into the outstanding work of archaeologists who uncover these great cities.
With your guide, you’ll explore the city where you’ll find the Codz Pop structure, covered in masks of the rain god, latticework, anthropomorphic sculptures, and more. You’ll also have the opportunity to discover the palace, which consists of 12 separate buildings, platforms, and 32 rooms. To end the day, you’ll return via private transport to Merida.
