3 Days, 2 Nights
Day 1: Explore Cantona Pyramids and Cuetzalan Temples
On the 1st day of your Mexico History and Culture Tour, you will depart from Mexico City at 8:00 am for the 3-hour drive to the archaeological site of Cantona. Cantona was once an important and disputed trade route, and one of the most urbanized cities in the pre-Hispanic era. Here, you’ll encounter pyramids, terraced landscapes, cobblestone roads, thousands of patios, and more.
After exploring Cantona with your expert bilingual (English/Spanish) guide, you’ll return to the van and head to Cuetzalan around 15:00 pm. Here, you’ll explore pre-Spanish temples, a stunning waterfall in the nearby jungles, and more.
In the evening, you’ll settle into the Posada Cuetzalan hotel where you’ll enjoy dinner.
Day 2: Tour the Botanical Gardens, and Watch an Impressive “Flying” Ritual
Today, you’ll continue your exploration of Cuetzalan with a guided tour of the Xoxoctic Botanical Garden. At the garden, you’ll enjoy beautiful lawns, surrounded by evergreen trees and orchids of different colors, as well as a variety of tree ferns and other vegetation.
At the end of the visit to the gardens, you’ll drive to the nearby village of Yohualinchan. Here, you’ll enjoy a traditional lunch (included) at a cooperative of indigenous women.
After lunch, visit the Tajin archaeological site and you return to Cuetzalan for a stroll through the town center. Here, your guide will introduce you to the exemplary architecture, and you’ll see several local monuments including the Church of San Francisco, the Church of the Jarritos, the Church of La Conchita, the Municipal Palace and more.
In the evening, you’ll go to dinner at Los Jarritos restaurant and observe the world-renowned flying ritual before spending the night at the hotel.
Day 3: Cuetzalan / Puebla / Mexico
After lunch, you’ll set out to the Cuetzalan’s unique outdoor market where bartering is still widely practiced. The two ethnic groups of the region, Nahuas and Totonacos, usually meet on Sundays to sell or exchange products. Enjoy a nice walk through the bustling street and let yourself be amazed by the vibrant community ritual around you.
Late in the morning, you will begin your trip back to Mexico City. On the way, you’ll stop at Puebla for a cable car ride up to Monumento a Ignacio Zaragoza for an exceptional view of the city from above. After exploring the monument, you’ll return to the car and continue back to Mexico City. Your Mexico History and Culture Tour has come to an end. You should arrive at your hotel by early evening.
