This is a two day immersion in the coffee process with the people who grow, harvest and produce the most important Nicaraguan export. You will work side by side with locals learning first hand the story behind a cup of coffee, before it arrives on your table. Your homestay brings you right into the local community to experience real Nicaraguan life.
Duration: 2 days and 1 night
Day 1: CoffeeCrop
The first day you go to a coffee cooperative where you participate in harvesting, pulping and fermentation of coffee. You’ll learn about important topics and how they effect livelihoods, such as fair trade, coffee market, and historical trends. You join a local family for dinner and spend the night at their home.
Day 2: The Coffee Route, from farm to the world
On the second day you visit a dry mill to see the industrial process of drying, threshing and coffee selection. You learn what it takes to be ready for export. At last, participate in a tasting session in the quality control laboratory to assess the characteristics of one of the best coffees in the world.
