La Rota is an extinct, forested volcano located approximately 15 km northeast of the city of León. It is an ecologically diverse area, home to many of León’s few remaining monkeys, squirrels, deer and old-growth forest. The small community of Matacaña is sited atop the volcano, comprised of about fifty residents, a small school and several small farms.
As a tourist destination, La Rota offers terrific panoramic views, a beautiful and moderately strenuous hike to the top, and the opportunity to meet the residents and experience a deeply rural Nicaraguan lifestyle. La Rota is easily accessible from the city of León, but it feels like a journey into the deep countryside and into the past.
All tours share profits with residents of La Rota, to promote protection of the volcano’s endangered resources.
