Abra Malaga Birding Expedition (3 Days)



This 3-day Abra Malaga birding tour is one of our best tours in the Cusco region where several endemic bird species can be observed in a single day.

The endemic species you can find on this tour are:

3 Days


Day 1


Early in the morning, we will start birding at Huacarpay Lake where we can see amazing birds such as:
***Bearded Mountaineer (Oreonympha nobilis)
***Streaked fronted Thornbird (Phacellodomus striaticeps)
***Cimnamon teal (Anas cyanoptera)
***Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus)
***Rusty Fronted Canastero (Asthenes ottonis)
***Puna teal (Anas puna)
***Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas), and many more
In the afternoon, we will continue travelling through the sacred valley and then to Ollantaytambo. We will stop in specific plains along the road in order to add more birds to our list. We will spend the night in an Ollantaytambo hotel.

Day 2


Today, we will again leave early and travel by bus from Ollantaytambo to Abra Malaga. We will look for several endemic species and some other interesting bird species such as:
***Inca wren (Pheugopedius eisenmanni)
***Marcapata Spinetail (Cranioleuca marcapatae)
***Cusco Brush Finch (Atlapetes canigenis)
***Parodi´s Hemispingus (Hemispingus parodii)
***Unstreaked tit-tyrant (Anairetes agraphia)
***Puna Thistletail (Asthenes helleri), and a lot more birds traveling in flocks.
In the afternoon we will return to Ollantaytambo where we will spend the night.

Day 3


We will start our third and final birding day at 4,316masl in a Polylepis forest that has unique specialized birds to the area. The birds we’ll be able to see are:
***White-browed tit-spinetail (Leptasthenura xenothorax)
***Royal Cinclodes (Cinclodes aricomae)
***Puna Tapaculo (Scytalopus simonsi)
***Andean Hillstart (Oreotrochilus estella)
***Giant conebill (Oreomanes fraseri)
***Creamy-crested Spinetail (Cranioleuca albicapilla)
***White-tufted Sunbeam (Aglaeactis castelnaudii)
***Chestnut-breasted mountain finch (Poospiza caesar)
***Stripe-headed Antpitta (Grallaria andicolus), and many more rare birds.
In the afternoon, we will travel back to Cusco.

What to Bring

  • Aside from Binoculars and photo-equipment
  • A spotting scope, if you have one
  • Flashlight for night birding
  • Light day pack
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • T-shirts and a long-sleeved shirt
  • Jeans or other cotton pants are comfortable, as well as quick-drying nylon ones
  • Cotton socks
  • Sweater, jacket or fleece for night birding
  • Light jacket, water resistant, or poncho
  • Hiking boots or sturdy shoes
  • Water bottle/canteen or camel pack
  • Sandals for after hours
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Plastic bags for camera, clothes, etc. Personal toiletries (shampoo, towel, etc)
  • Converter /adaptor for the electricity (Plugs are typically the 2 pronged flat type found in the US)
