Itinerary

Day 1

Start time: Between 4:30 am and 5:00 am    

Day’s Activities:

We’ll  start our Salkantay Trekking to Machu Picchu tour around 4:30 am to take a three-hour hike to Cruzpata. Beautiful panoramic views of snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4,120 m and Salkantay; 6,271 m) will surround us.  Later, we’ll continue our ascent to Soraypamapa.

Difficulty level: Hard

Meals & Accommodations: Lunch at Cruzpata.  Dinner at the highest and coldest campsite of our trek at Soraypamapa (4,200 m).

Day 2

Day’s Activities:

Starting at 5:00 am, we’ll ascend to the trek’s highest pass (4,650 m) between Salkantay mountain and Tucarhuay where we will have amazing views of snow-capped mountains. Then, we’ll descend through the dramatic scenery of the cloud forest to the beginning of the jungle near Huayracpunku.

Difficulty level:  Very hard

Meals & Accommodations: Breakfast and dinner at the campsite at Colcapampa (3,000 m). Lunch at Huayracpunku.

Other useful information: Horses and mules are available for rental to assist you if need be along our Salkantay Trekking to Machu Picchu tour.

Day 3

Day’s Activities:

We’ll begin the day at 6:30 am with a hike through the upper jungle before. Along the way to La Playa, we will cross the Lluskamayo River as well as many creeks. We will also pass diverse waterfalls, tropical fruits, and plants. Once we get to Saint Teresa, we will head to the hot springs for a relaxing evening.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Meals & Accommodations: Breakfast and dinner at the campsite at Saint Teresa 1,500 m. Lunch at La Playa.

Other useful information: Hotels are available in Santa Teresa for an additional $30.

Day 4

Day’s Activities:

We will start the day around 8:00 am. After crossing the Saint Teresa bridge and following the Urubamba river upstream, we will head to the hydroelectricity station. Along the way, we will pass several coca leaf and banana tree plantations. From here, we will trek in the outskirts of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains to Aguas Calientes. There is also an optional train from the hydroelectricity station to Aguas Calientes

Difficulty level: Moderate

Meals & Accommodations: Breakfast at the campsite, lunch during the trek, and dinner at the hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Other useful information: In the evening, you can visit the thermal springs at Aguas Calientes for an additional cost of 10 soles. Enjoy the relaxation from the thermal baths after Salkantay trekking!

Day 5

Day’s Activities:

Today, we’ll take a 2 hour guided walking tour of Machu Picchu.  You will also have the option to climb 45 minutes to the top of Huayna Picchu (2,720 m).

Difficulty level: Moderate

Meals & Accommodations: Breakfast in the hotel at Aguas Calientes. Lunch in Aguas Calientes (not included). You will be back in Cusco for the evening and will need your own accommodation.

Your guide will give you your train tickets. The train normally leaves about 2:55 pm and arrives to Cusco at 7:45 pm.  These times are subject to change.  Alternatively, you can stay one more night in Aguas Calientes to  visit the thermal springs and further explore Machu Picchu. Our Salkantay Trekking to Machu Picchu trip may have finished, but your memories will last a lifetime!

Difficulty level: Strenuous

Salkantay trekking runs March through December.

The train included in all tours is the Cerrojo backpacker. Train times will only be confirmed once the tour is paid in full. During the high season (June to September), the earliest train you could take is the 1:37 pm and the last train is at 9:20 pm. Train times are subject to change depending on Peru rail time table and availability. If organized in advance, the train can be upgraded to Vistadome (larger windows) for an additional cost. Additionally, we will organize the transport back to Cusco (by taxi or by bus).
