Join us on an unforgettable canoe adventure to learn about the real Amazon!
This Amazon Canoe trip is currently the only of its kind in Iquitos. It combines the right amount of adventure with a unique flair. For several days, we will paddle down the Amazonian river in our traditional dugout canoes. Along the way, we will stop in Amazonian villages and meet with the people who live there.
This trip includes walking through the jungle to see wildlife such as the Giant Amazon Otters at play. We can also see primates, birds, rodents, and many species of fish. One particularly interesting fish is the black pirahña which can grow up to 12 lbs.
At night we will typically camp on the river banks. However, we also have connections with local lodges if you prefer to stay somewhere with clean beds and bathrooms.
On our first day, we will take a speed boat a few hours upstream from Iquitos along the Nanay River into the Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve. Our destination for the day is the small jungle town of Diamante Azul. Although this village is rarely visited by foreigners, you’ll find the local people to be very warm and welcoming.
In Diamante we will camp and take walks through the jungle where we will have the opportunity to observe an abundance of Amazonian wildlife including a great number of birds and reptiles. We also have an alternative option for those who would prefer to stay in a jungle lodge on their first night. Our comfortable lodge facilities are located in the beautiful Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo National Reserve.
On the second day, we will wake up bright and early and head to the the town of Santa Maria via speed boat. From here, we will start our Amazon canoe journey down the tributaries and streams of the river. While traveling by canoe is much slower, it provides better opportunities to see the vibrant wildlife of the jungle.
We will paddle the canoes at a slow and comfortable pace, and our flexible itinerary will be based on the interests of those on the tour. Each day, we will stop around 12:00 pm noon on a beach or in a local community for lunch. After lunch, we will spend the afternoons on jungle walks, fishing, and swimming. In these villages, there are local healers and shamans who have an extensive knowledge of the medicinal plants of the area. Dinner will be served at around 7:00 pm.
