Trek Peru: High Altitude Trekking on the Ausangate Circuit and Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Trek Peru from the Ausangate Circuit to Rainbow Mountain. Embark on an exciting physical challenge and mentally disconnect in remote natural beauty. On your trek, you will spend six days and five nights in the fresh air and high altitude of the Andes. Experience Apu Ausangate, huge glaciers, colorful lakes, and of course the multicolored rock waves on Rainbow Mountain.

On the trek you will be camping comfortably under clear starry skies. As part of the adventure, you’ll stop off at remote villages to better understand local Andean culture, and no doubt you’ll cross paths with some inquisitive alpacas on the trail!

Day 1 — Cusco-Upis
You will be picked up very early from your hotel in Cusco and drive to Tinqi, where the trek begins for the Ausangate Circuit. In Tinqi you will meet the muleeters (mule-handlers) and buy any last minute supplies or snacks before embarking on the trek.

The hike to the first place of camp, Upis, is about three hours of moderate ascent. You will pass potato fields, local farms, and grazing llama in the fields before arriving at Upis. The air will become a lot cooler and fresher as you get nearer to Ausangate and the stunning glaciers around it.

You will arrive in Upis the late afternoon and will have the option of soothing your muscles in natural hot springs if you wish before dinner. Upis is located at 14,272 feet above sea level (4350 meters), so prepare yourself for a cold night!

Day 2 — Upis-Ausangatecocha
After an early breakfast, the trek continues with a climb to the Arapa Pass, at 15,584 feet (4750 meters). This uphill climb will take about two hours, and on the way you will pass through a sparsely populated yet scenic valley. As you head up through this valley, you will be amazed at the breathtaking views of Ausangate mountain that will appear as well as the surrounding landscapes.

Once you reach the pass, you will descend along a cliff dividing the mountain, where you will see panoramic views of vibrant, colorful lakes. You will stop for lunch Yanacocha (Black) Lake, and then continue to the campsite at Ausangatecocha, located at 15,092 feet (4600 meters).

Day 3 — Ausangatecocha – Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca – Illacocha
This is the day you will reach the spectacular Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)! You will cross wide valleys and colorful hills and reach the majestic Rainbow Mountain around midday. At this point you will stop for lunch, and have some time to enjoy the incredible scenery and relax. The last section of the trek will be to Illacocha Lagoon, where you’ll set up camp for the night.

Day 4 — Illacocha-Jampa
From the Illacocha Lagoon you will climb up to Palomani pass (17,060 feet/5200 meters), where you will reach the highest point of the trail. After the pass, you will follow the trail down into the nearby valley to have a break and rest for lunch. That afternoon, you will be able to soak in the beautiful views of snowcapped Tres Picos and Puca Punta mountains. You will continue through the wide green valley of Pampa Jutunpata and then up into the Jampa Valley before making a camp near Jampa.

Day 5 — Jampa-Pacchanta
You will pass through the small community town of Jampa today, after which you will begin the trek to the last pass of the expedition, the Q’ampa Pass. On the way, you can take in stunning sights of multi-colored lakes and will stop for lunch next to a stunning lagoon. From this point, you will trek about two more hours on to the village Pacchanta. Here you will have the lovely opportunity to rest and soak in hot thermal springs for a few hours, and even enjoy a well-deserved beer! You will set up camp near this spot in Pacchanta, and will have the whole afternoon to explore the Andean village if you wish.

Day 6 — Pacchanta-Cusco
After breakfast, you will embark on an easy trek of 1-2 hours to the village Tinqi. At this point your van and driver will be ready and waiting to drive you back to Cusco. Your Trek Peru experience ends with a late afternoon drop-off to your hotel.

Important Notes

  • This is a high elevation trek, so it is HIGHLY recommended that you spend a minimum of two days acclimatizing at elevation before beginning the trip
  • Weather during the trip can suddenly and unexpectedly change, so be prepared with layers, as days are generally warm and nights cold
  • Be sure to bring a hat and gloves, even if it’s been warm during other parts of your Peru trip!
