Ausangate Hike through the Peruvian Andes (6 Days)

  • Traverse Cordillera Vilcanota
  • A remote trekking route in the Andes
  • Learn Quechua with local herdsmen
  • View stunning wildlife and high-altitude lakes

Ausangate Hike:  high and wild trekking circuit winds its way through this rarely-visited range, following lovely alpine valleys which are home to Quechua Indian herdsmen and some of Peru’s most spectacular wildlife such as vicunas and the Andean condor. Traversing this pristine and beautiful region, you’ll enjoy a series of wonderful lakeside camps and cross several 5000 meter passes, each providing far-reaching mountain views. The hike ends in Phinaya, a small and remote Andean community.

6 Days/5 Nights

Day 1: Cusco to Tinqui / Pacchanta / Comercocha

You’ll be picked up from you hotel at 6:00 am and head to Cusco along the Puerto Maldonado highway. On the way, you’ll pass through the towns of Urcos, Ccatcca and Ocongate before arriving to the trail head at Tinqui. After you get set up, you’ll go on a 3 hour walk towards Pacchanta and have the lunch by hot springs. After lunch, you’ll continue the hike up to camp in a pasture by Comercocha Lagoon.

Meals Included: Box-lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Comercocha / Quilleta

After breakfast, you’ll head out on a slight climb past mountain lakes and isolated shepherds’ huts toward the magnificent first pass of Abra Q’ampa. On this part of the Ausangate hike, you’ll have a good chance to see troops of vicuñas (the wild, graceful relative of the llama) amid the rugged glacial ice. Continuing down the valley, a new vista opens up to the south of Nevado Ausangate. After lunch, you’ll hike for another 2 hours before you reach Hacienda Quilleta where you will set up camp.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Quilleta / Sibinacocha Lagoon

After breakfast, you’ll leave the camp to begin a gradual climb up to reach the highest point of the trek at the summit of Condor Pass. From the pass, you’ll have an incredible view of the valley filled with colorful mountains and the stunning Sibinacocha Lagoon.

After another 3 hour hike, you’ll cross another pass and then descend into the valley of the Sibinacocha Lagoon, a glacial lake some 15 km in length and 2 km wide. Flamingos may be seen along the shore. Besides the rare stone shepherd’s hut, there is no sign of population in this vast valley.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Sibinacocha Lagoon / Ccascaracocha

After breakfast, you’ll hike around the lake head and work your way eastward into another even more beautiful valley on your Ausangate hike. The day’s destination is Ccascaracocha, a smaller lake with a fascinating concentration of high-altitude Andean birds. You will observe giant coots (which build up piles of mud in the shallows to make their nest) as well as pairs of Huallata (Andean geese), ducks, and flamingos. Several Quechua families have permanent homes by the remote lakeshore where they tend enormous herds of alpacas surrounded by impressive snow-capped peaks such as Montura and Chumpi.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Climb Cerro Yayamari

After breakfast, you’ll have the option to climb up the snow-covered peak of Cerro Yayamari in the middle of this picturesque panorama of lakes and glacial summits.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Yayamari / Phinaya / Cusco

After breakfast, you’ll hike out to the southern end of the Sibinacocha lagoon to an awaiting vehicle in Phinaya. This is a small Andean community with a beautiful little church where you will have lunch. After you and the group pack up, your Ausangate hike will come to an end and you will be taken back to your hotel in Cusco .
