After a hearty breakfast we will begin our two-hour trek up to Capuliyoc (2,915m). Along the way, we will be treated to great views of the Apurimac Valley as well as the snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc and Wayna Cacho (5,482m). We will begin to descend the eastern slopes of the Andes on our way to Coca Masana (2,330m). You will notice a marked change in flora and fauna as the elevation drops and the temperature rises. We will settle in for the night at Playa Rosalina (Rosalina Beach) at 1,550m and make camp by the Apurimac River.
PLAYA ROSALINA – CHOQUEQUIRAO
Again we get up very early to start, after the breakfast, we begin our walk to reach Choquequirao.
Before midday, we will reach the archaeological site and get to know it step by step, learning about the great abilities and intelligence of the people who constructed this archaeological site. As we experience the site we will again be seeing the glorious time of the Inca Empire.
Admiring the beauty and with our heads full of ideas, we will observe the impressive flying condors, which around 3:00 pm appear in the area of Choquequirao as they fly to higher zones.
Later we take a route to Raqypata where we camp and after dinner, we spend the night.
CHOQUEQUIRAO ALL DAY
Our third day consists of exploring the 8 unique parts of Choquequirao. We will have the opportunity to see the ruins of their ancient food deposits, qolqas, houses, sun ceremonial houses, and terraces. Once again as the valley warms from the midday sun, we will be treated to the presence of the the condors, languidly riding the wind currents in the valley. In the afternoon we will hike back to our camps and dedicate the evening to enjoying the views and stillness of the valley.
CHOQUEQUIRAO – MAIZAL
We will set out early in the morning through the highland scrub towards Choquequirao Pass. Once we cross the pass, we will continue to Pinchiyoc terraces which means “where the water jumps”. These terraces are thought to be used by the Incas to cultivate plants for daily use in Choquequirao. We will take a break from our decent towards Rio Blanco to have lunch. After eating, we will continue towards Maizal where we will set up camp for the night.
MAIZAL – YANAMA
We will break camp in the morning and set off towards the San Juan Pass. As we continue uphill, we will be treated to a beautiful change of scenery as we enter the cloud forest and the Andean highland which is covered in the unique Ichu grass. We will explore the silver mines of Victoria around the afternoon right before we set off for the Inca trail which is made up of well preserved stones which catch the afternoon light splendidly. We will stop for lunch in a pass at around 3900m elevation where we will be treated to a great view of Mt. Choquetakarpo. Afterwards, we will continue to descend until we reach Yanama where we will camp for the night.
YANAMA – COLLPAPAMPA
After breakfast, we will hike till we reach the highest part of the entire trek, the Yanma Pass at 4678m. We will take a well needed break here while we enjoy views of the natural splendor of the surrounding snow-capped Andes. We will then descend to Collpapampa to camp for the night.
