Description

Choquequirao Tour: Choquequirao, “Cradle of Gold” is a partially excavated Incan city next to the Salkantay Mountain Range above the Valley of the Apurimac River. The entire complex encompasses 1,800 hectares. This extraordinary 8-day trekking expedition will bring trekkers to Cusco’s major archaeological sites of Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco/ Cachora / Chiquisca

You’ll be picked up from the hotel at 5:00 am and transferred in private transportation to Cachora where you can observe the majestic snow-covered peak of Padrayoc. While the group is having breakfast, the crew will get the horses ready for the trek.

The hike on this first day is 16 km (approximately 6 hours). From the viewpoint of Capuliyoc, you will have the chance to see condors. Later, as you descend into the Apurímac Canyon, the vegetation will change from Agave and Tunacactus to a dwarf tree forest. You’ll have lunch at Cocamasana before continuing on to the final destination of the day, Chiquisqa, where you’ll camp in the evening.

Day 2: Chiquisca / Choquequirao Archeological Site

After an early morning breakfast, you’ll head down into the Apurímac River canyon. After a brief break, you’ll continue the trek up to the archaeological site that lends its name to the Choquequirao tour. On the way, you’ll visit Santa Rosa and have lunch at Maranpata. The campsite at Choquequirao offers a spectacular view of the canyon as well as Andean Condors soaring in the mountains.

Day 3: Choquequirao / Maizal

On day 3 of the Choquequirao tour, you’ll walk uphill for a while to the first pass of the day before descending through the cloud forest to the Pinchayunuyoc archaeological site. Next, you’ll head to the Rio Blanco, enjoying the flora fauna along the ancient Inca trail along the way. Once you get to the river,  you’ll have time to swim, rest and have lunch.

After lunch, you’ll start the steep climb up to the Maizal village high over the river. You’ll camp at this sacred Inca site for the night.

Day 4: Maizal / Yanama

After breakfast, you’ll walk by the impressive Victoria mines that were created by the Inca before heading towards the Victoria Pass. The long climb will take though through the amazingly beautiful cloud forest and over the Andean Puna covered with Ichu grass. Here marks the beginning of  original paved Inca trails (that trekkers greatly appreciate) on the way to Victoria Pass.

At Victoria Pass, you’ll break for lunch with a view of the Choquetakarpo mountain in the background and the chance to see condors soaring above if weather permits. Finally, you’ll descend to the community of Yanama to spend the night.

Day 5: Yanama / Colpapampa

After breakfast, you’ll slowly climb to the higher Yanama pass that also offers an incredible view of the snow-capped Mt. Sacsarayoj and Mt. Padreyoc. As you continue up from Yanama through the valley towards the highest point of the Choquequirao tour, you’ll have another chance to see condors. Today you’ll see new landscapes as you cross small wood and dirt bridges on the way towards the community of Totora where you’ll stop for lunch. Finally, you’ll head to Colpapampa, a beautiful spot with some natural hot springs to relax in, to camp for the night.

Day 6: Colpapampa / Lucmabamba

After breakfast, day 6 of your Choquequirao tour will continue with an easy hike along the Santa Teresa River past rich vegetation, beautiful waterfalls, and scenic passion fruit and coffee plantations. You’ll pass by the settlement at Wiñaypoko before going to La Playa for lunch. After lunch, you’ll continue on to Lucmabamba.

Day 7: Lucmabamba / LLaqtapata / Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, you’ll walk past banana, coffee, and avocado plantations on the way to Llactapata. You’ll also enter spectacled-bear territory and will have a good chance to see flocks of parrots. As you cross, the river, you’ll start climbing for 2-3 hours up to Abra Q’elloqasa where you will be greeted by a stunning view of Machu Picchu. Later, you will also enjoy an amazing view from the recently restored archaeological site of Llaqtapata of the Salkantay mountain.

Finally, you’ll take a 2-hour descent towards the Aobamba River through rich bamboo forests, orchards and coffee plantations before boarding a train to Aguas Calientes.

Day 8: Machu Picchu / Back to Cusco

On the last day of your Choquequirao tour, you’ll have breakfast at the hotel in Aguas Calientes, before catching an early 5:30 am bus to Machu Picchu for a full day excursion. Upon arrival, you will participate in a guided tour of the Citadel that visits the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, houses, warehouses, and a large central square. These are all connected by narrow roads and steps that are surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, you’ll have time to stroll around the Archaeological Site at your leisure.
Then, you will have time to participate in some optional activities such as climbing to Wayna Picchu.

In the afternoon you’ll take a train from Aguas Calientes back to Cusco where you will be brought back to your hotel.
