4 Days/3 Nights

Day 1

Day’s Activities:

Today we will start our Choquequirao Trekking to Machu Picchu trip at 5:00 am to meet the staff members before a 4-hour bus ride to Cachora, a town on the outskirts of the Apurimac canyon. We will  begin our trek here and enjoy the dramatic landscapes and diverse flora and fauna along the trail to our campsite at Santa Rosa (1, 650 m).

Difficulty level: Moderate

Meals & Accommodations: We’ll have breakfast en route to Cachora (not included), and camp in tents in Santa Rosa.

Other useful information:
There is a significant altitude change of 1,300 meters between the hike down to the Apurimac Canyon and then up to the site in the clouds. It is a challenging yet amazing experience.

Day 2

Day’s Activities:

We’ll begin the day early at 5:00 am with a challenging, steep ascent from our campsite to the highest point (Maranpata 3,150 m). Afterwards, we will hike through a thick cloud forest towards the Inca site of Choquekirao. Later, we’ll have time to relax and enjoy the archaeological site, plants, animals (hopefully condors), and gorgeous views of nearby canyons and snow-capped mountains (Choquetacarpo –5,910 m). We will camp  in Choquequirao Inca site (3,033 m)

Difficulty level: Very difficult

Accommodations: Campsite at Choquequirao (3,033 m) with an average temperature of 9º C.

Day 3

Day’s Activities

Our day begins bright and early with a 3-hour guided tour around the Inca site of Choquekirao . After this, we head down to our last campsite, Chiquisca (1,680 m).

Difficulty level: Moderate

Meals & Accommodations: Breakfast and dinner at Chiquisca (1,680 m) campsite. Lunch during trek.

Other useful information:
In the 18th century, a French explore discovered the “lost city” of Choquekirao (meaning “cradle of gold”). The city fascinated 19th-century explorers and was also visited by Hiram Bingham prior to his discovery of Machu Picchu.
This mysterious abandoned city shares many parallels with Machu Picchu and there are a variety of theories about its function. Only recently, however, COPESCO (the official body responsible for tourism in Peru) has partially excavated the site and there remains a lot more to be discovered.

Day 4

Day’s Activities:
We will trek uphill toward Cachora where we will catch a bus back to Cusco, arriving around 8:00 pm

Difficulty level: Moderate – Easy
