Begin your Peru chocolate tour with a welcome gathering in the Joicy V. Partra Cultural Center and sculpture gallery. Meet fellow travelers, enjoy a coffee, and admire the magical work of Peruvian Amazonian artist Joicy V. Partra.
From the Cultural Center, travel by boat down the Huallaga River, passing native communities along the way. Enjoy the spectacular natural landscapes and peaceful countryside until you reach a large island and organic cacao farm — growing 15 acres of cacao. Explore the farm your bilingual guide, to learn more about sustainable agriculture within Peru’s local communities. Enjoy lunch and time to relax on the beach.
From the cacao island, travel further down river to Jumanchi Springs. Here, enjoy a 1-hour hike to the natural springs and take a refreshing dip in the pristine water. In the afternoon, return back to Chazuta for an amazing home-grown dinner straight from the gardens of Rio Bosque Magico organic farmers. Return to the Cultural Center’s comfortable facilities for the night.
Day 2: Try your Hand at Cacao Harvesting and Production
Enjoy a healthy breakfast at the Joicy V. Barter Cultural Center, then travel to Rio Bosque Magico, an organic farm run by the Heribertos family. First, walk through the organic farm with a member of the Heribertos family as your guide. Learn about agroforestry and the process of sustainably growing cacao beans. If you’re feeling ambitious, learn the technique for harvesting cacao with a machete, and even try it yourself!
Enjoy an organic lunch straight form the farm, then check head to the chocolate production facilities. Here, participate in the fermenting and drying processes to prepare the cacao beans for chocolate making! In the evening, enjoy another delicious home-grown organic meal, then tour the organic Mishky Cacao Chocolate Factory for a taste of the final product. Journey back to Tarapoto in the late evening.
