If you view travel not only as a great adventure, but rather as an opportunity to educate yourself and better the world, this trip is for you! Learn from the locals as you connect with nature.
This isn’t your average Peruvian small group rain forest trip. You will experience a combination of adventure, nature, local culture and environmental conservation that will give you plenty of time to connect with nature, yourself and others in the Amazon. The Culture & Ecotourism in Peru’s Amazon tour features education, nature, and culture and will help you better understand the challenges that the environment faces today.
Throughout the trip, local sustainable development groups will attend to us as their guests. You’ll stay in a cozy, authentic, and family-owned eco-lodge surrounded by the jungle near Tarapoto. It is the perfect place to relax for a few days and enjoy nature!
By choosing this tour, you will contribute to rainforest conservation and aid in generating work options for community members. For example, because of deforestation, the flow of the Cumbaza River, which provides water to Tarapoto and its surroundings, has decreased close to 50% in the last 30 years. This is a direct consequence of migration, lack of work alternatives and education. Ecotourism can provide alternative sources of income and employment that can help change this pattern.
3 Days/2 Nights
Day 1: Waterfall and Trekking
Early in the morning we’ll pick you up from the airport and take you straight into the stunning forest. We’ll spend a full day trekking and taking part in various nature activities. We will have the chance to bathe in a waterfall, bird watch, and hike along the river where we will enjoy lunch among the fauna and flora.
Day 2: San Roque de Cumbaza
After eating an early breakfast, a local tour guide will assist us in a trek along the edge of the Cordillera Escalera. Along the way we will encounter gorgeous scenery and native plants. We will also witness firsthand the challenges facing the Amazon when we come upon a panoramic view of deforested areas contrasted with a protected area, the Cordillera Escalera.
Later we will hike down to town to enjoy a locally-prepared lunch. Afterwards, we will learn about native medicinal plants and have some free time to swim in the river. In the evening, we’ll relax at the eco-lodge for a bit before heading to a nearby village for dinner and a bonfire with the locals.
Day 3: Culture
Today’s activities will connect you to the local culture and way-of-life. First, we’ll visit a local family’s cacao farm to observe how chocolate is produced. We’ll also get to do a taste test to check for quality. After lunch, we’ll visit the native community of Chirikyacu to do crafts with some of the women from the community. On our way to the airport, we’ll make one last stop to enjoy some ice cream made from local fruits.
Flight to Tarapoto: about 100 USD for return flights (Inquire if you want to include it)
