Day 1 – Ride on Your Horse to Humantay Lake and Take in Breathtaking Views Along the Way
Your horseback riding Machu Picchu tour starts from a place called Soraypampa, elevation 12, 631 feet (3,850 meters). After a good breakfast, you will ride your horse up to Humantay Lake, a beautiful place surrounded by icy mountains. You will have time to admire the amazing views. Then, return to the main dirt road and ride to the lunch spot.
Afterwards, you will ride for a couple more hours to the campsite, with some uphill and downhill parts. The campsite is located at a gorgeous place called Japonisichayoc (13,123 feet/4,000 meters) at the bottom of Salkantay Mountain.
Day 2 – Soak in Beautiful Mountain Scenery on a Remote Trail
After waking up with traditional coca tea and a plentiful breakfast, you will hop on your horse to continue your horseback riding Machu Picchu trip in the Andes. You will be able to enjoy beautiful mountain views and a delicious lunch along the way. Finally, you will camp at a spot surrounded by llamas and alpacas. You will be able to immerse yourself in nature as this trail is less crowded.
Day 3 – Ride on Cachiccata Mountain and Take the Train to Aguas Calientes
Today you will ride on Cachiccata Mountain. You will pass through farm fields and see llamas and alpacas. The farmers in this area have mixed heritage and speak both Quechua and Spanish. Upon arrival to a place called Pumatales, you will have lunch and say goodbye to the cooking team.
From there, you will go by car to Ollantaytambo and take the 19:00 am night train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. You will arrive there by 21:00 pm and stay the night in a hotel.
Day 4 – Explore the Incredible Ancient City of Machu Picchu and Go Back to Cusco
Wake-up time today is 4:30 am, with breakfast at 5:00 am, so that you can take the 5:30 am bus up to Machu Picchu. There, you will have a guided tour for a couple of hours, then free time to explore. One option for your free time is walking to the Sun Gate, a 2-hour round-trip hike.
Afterwards, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, have lunch (optional), and go on a 2-hour train ride to Ollantaytambo. From there, you will take a 2-hour bus ride to Cusco. This is where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
