Day 1: Hike to Chinchero and Meet your Host Family
Begin your immersive experience with hotel pick-up in Cusco and transfer to Lake Piuray. Here, you’ll hike along local trails, through fields of corn, potatoes, quinoa, and other typical Andean crops. Hike beneath the spectacular backdrop of the Sacred Valley’s rolling hills and distant glacial peaks.
After hiking 4.5 hours, you’ll arrive in the village of Chinchero. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and participate in the traditions and customs of your gracious host family, and spend the night in a local home.
Day 2: Tour the Chinchero Archaeological Complex and Attend an Inca Textile Demonstration
After a good night’s sleep, wake up for a fresh traditional breakfast made with locally-sourced ingredients, then set out for the Chinchero archaeological complex. The site was once home to temples and shrines devoted to the Inca gods of nature, weather, and land fertility. The site was home to the royal estate of Inca Yupanqui. Here, enjoy a visit with an expert local guide, then enjoy exploring the mystic complex on your own.
In the afternoon, you’ll be invited to a demonstration on hand-weaving traditional textiles. Many local communities still work using traditional Inca techniques, and now several have begun the work to preserve this knowledge and skill. Observe the shearing, washing, dying, and weaving processes that go into textile production, and learn the significance of the typical patterns and symbols in Inca textiles. You’ll end the day sharing dinner with your host family back at the house.
Day 3: Help Reforest the Sacred Valley
In the morning, you’ll say goodbye to your hosts and set out for one final experience in the Sacred Valley. Today, you’ll participate in a reforestation project focused on repopulating the Sacred Valley with native trees. The goal of this ecological project is to help to maintain the traditional way of life that functions in harmony with the natural world. After participating in the regrowth of the valley’s native species, you’ll return to Cusco.
