This Inca Ruins Trek will show you some of the most incredible ruins in Peru, many of which remain undiscovered by today’s tourists. You will start from the rarely visited Inca capital of Vitcos. Then, you will continue on a beautifully maintained and rarely traveled Inca road to reach the magnificent ruins of Choquequirao. Along the way, you will stop at many other impressive ruins and archaeological sites. Join us for a trek appreciating both stunning Inca ruins and breathtaking Peruvian wilderness.

Day 1 – Drive through Abra Malaga Pass and Explore the Fascinating Huancacalle Ruins
After an early breakfast in your hotel, you will be picked up in a van for a beautiful, lengthy drive. The ride will take you through Abra Malaga Mountain Pass (14,108 feet/4,300 meters) to get to the warm Santa Maria high jungle. From there, you will drive up Vilcabamba Valley to Huancacalle. There are a variety of archaeological sites nearby. You will be able to visit the Palace of Vitcos, where Manco Inca was assassinated. Then, marvel at incredible examples of Inca stone carving at Yurak Rumi, the temple of the sun. At night, you will rest in a hostel in town.
Day 2 – Hike on a Rarely Visited Inca Path through Choquecatarpo Pass
After breakfast, you will start hiking. The day’s trek begins with a steep uphill on a remote Inca trail to the top of Choquecatarpo (15,005 feet/4,574 meters). When you get to the pass, you will head downhill to the first campsite at Colcamachay (12,872 feet/3,923 meters).
Day 3 – Follow the Inca Trail to Yanama River
You will enjoy a filling hot breakfast, then start hiking again on the Inca Trail. When the path enters the forest, you will take a modern trail to Yanama River. From the river, you will walk uphill to the small village of Yanama (11,678 feet/3,560 meters).
Day 4 – Climb Abra San Juan, Spot Condors, and Visit the Old Colonial Victoria Mines
On the fourth day of your Inca Ruins Trek, you will climb up Abra San Juan (13,556 feet/4,132 meters). If you are lucky, you can see condors! You will eat lunch at a lookout point over Rio Blanco (White River) and see the old colonial mines of Victoria. Afterwards, you will walk to the Maizal campsite (9,889 feet/3,014 meters).
Day 5 – Trek Downhill and Uphill to Pinchuynulloq and Arrive to Choquequirao
After breakfast, you will go on a steep downhill to Rio Blanco (6,070 feet/1,850 meters). You will start early in the morning to avoid the canyon heat that comes with the sun. When you cross the river, you will go uphill and have lunch at Pinchuynulloq (8,045 feet/2,452 meters). Then, you will hike on a steep incline, arriving to a point above Choquequirao. Enjoy spectacular views of the majestic citadel before going down to its base, the campsite for the night.
Day 6 – Explore the Magnificent Ancient Ruins of Choquequirao
Today is devoted to exploring Choquequirao. You will still do a lot of walking, as the sections of ruins are 40 minutes from each other. At about 15:00 pm, you will head out to camp at Marampata (9,471 feet/2,887 meters).
Day 7 – Appreciate the Beauty of Apurimac Canyon
Today has a more relaxing start, as you enjoy a lovely brunch while admiring the canyon. Then, you will head downhill at about 12:00 pm towards the Apurimac River. You will rest and have a snack at Santa Rosa (6,729 feet/2,051 meters) before continuing to the river. Next, you’ll hike up to Chiquisca (6,240 feet/1,902 meters) while enjoying the refreshing breeze.
Day 8 – Ascend to the Canyon Rim and Return to your Hotel
The last day of your Inca Ruins Trek starts early so you can make a lot of progress before the sun comes up. After breakfast, you will start your hike to the canyon edge. When you get there, you will enjoy a delicious lunch at a lookout point. From there, you will take a short walk to the car. Finally, you will be dropped off at your hotel.
